Can SM's wear metal insignias on there BDU's like the cadets? Or does it need to be cloth?

Cloth. Cadets promote a bit faster then senior members do.

Senior Members wear cloth.  The only place that metal insignia is authorized is for the Blue BDU cover.

Cadets in the officer grades also wear cloth and not metal insignia.

One of the many logic-defying aspects of CAP uniform regs...can't wear them on the BBDU's itself, but can wear them on the hat.

Makes no sense.

Since you are now a SM you need to dive into the regs of the program.  A good place to start would be CAPM39-1 and it's supplements.  A little homework will answer many of the questions you have especially on uniforms.

Hey, for the USAF we could wear subdued metallic insignia on our BDUs. Or in some cases could wear bright metallic insignia on the cap. You could also have cloth on the collar, bright metal on the cap. I suspect that is where this originated.
