That question should start an interesting chain.

Young man(or woman), fruit salad refers to the multitude of ribbons that some people wear.

I suspect that some young people have never even seen a real fruit salad.

That guy on the right...is he a Colonel-General? And I thought the Naval ranks were confusing!

The guy in the middle... omg! Even half of his ribbons would be a lot!

He's probably a WWII vet who remained after the war, he looks to be in his 80's.  While our schools don't teach much about it, the Russians saw a great majority of the WWII action (and they seem to be pretty free with the chest candy).

I think the one in the middle is also wearing Soviet Air Force "Sniper" pilot's wings.  Those were not just handed-out like so much of their other blingage (such as writing a positive essay on Marx).  I would guess that pilot downed more than a few Messerschmitts and Focke-Wulfs on the Eastern Front.

Really, the Soviet forces that were our allies-of-convenience in WWII were tough cookies.  The entire population was mobilised.  Tanks were driven off the assembly line unpainted and straight into battle.  Stalingrad was Hitler's second kick-in-the-teeth (the first being the Battle Of Britain) that ultimately brought him down.

I agree, the Soviet war effort is ignored all too often here in the US. Not too many people realize how many people were sacrificed, and how much the industry was mobilized.

The guy in the middle also has two awards of the "Hero of the Soviet Union" medal, so he is either a big dog politically or a kick-butt, killer,  kind of guy. Again, not the kind of thing Ivan hands out like candy....

I don't profess to know much about Soviet ranks, but the guy on the right looks like an Admiral to me: note the anchor on his lapel.  He looks like either a three or four star: actually a three and a half, if you count the stripes.

Since those cats are talking to Putin, they are pretty high up, whatever their rank.  Seem to remember that those guys wear their uniforms until they die.

He's a Fleet Admiral. The Large star is the insignia of a Marshal or Fleet Admiral of the Soviet Union

And the fellow in the middle wears what looks like a Marshal's star (the big one) below the insignia of the air force.

Hmmm ...

Talk about chest candy ... this guy has a real sweet tooth!   :D

I think the one on the wearer's left may be the Hero of Socialist Labour.  The stars are ever so slightly different.  But I can't tell if it has the hammer & sickle on it.  In the picture of Brezhnev, he's wearing 3 Hero of the Soviet Union and 1 Hero of Socialist Labour.

Why do I know any of this?  I have absolutely no clue.  I guess I just like researching uniform bling.

Soviet bloc practice was to wear an additional ribbon or medal for each subsequent award, rather than our practice of using attached devices to indicate multiple awards.

Evidently Russian military has maintained the custom.

Not to mention some awards actually consisted of multiple elements/ribbons...For example, those awarded one of the "Hero" designations were also awarded the Order of Lenin.

Maybe my eyes are just not what they used to be, but I don't see an Order of Lenin amongst all the chest candy and gongs...
