Uh, no. the vents are on the sides. The cardboard just goes into the top. If the vents are covered, you're not doing it right.

Here is another recommendation, get a smaller than usual hat. If your a 7 1/2(like me) you should go a 7 1/4. It techanically sits on your head, it'll never fall off in formation, it will not touch your head, and it won't be crooked has long has you put it on correctly. Fits tight like the sleeves(if you role them to perfection and make them wrinkleless) and complements well starched set of BDU's and a well shined set of boots.

Is metal grade still authorized for either the BDU or BBDU hat?

I haven't seen an ICL on that.

Check the Jan, 08 ICL.  Quick answer, BBDU hat=yes, BDU hat=no, embroidered only.
