My choice was: Tried to serve but couldn't.

I'm medically disqualified from active / reserve service due to having monocular vision (one eye). I would have gladly served but couldn't get around it.

My father on the other hand, was a member of the 3rd Infantry Division in WWII and literally fought alongside Audie Murphy (one of the most decorated soldiers in history). He received the purple heart after being injured by artillery during the invasion of southern france. He lost the use of his right arm and lost three quarters of his right lung but pushed on and ended up working for the War Department here in the states.  I have to admit that I'm proud of my father's military service and his sheer strength and tenacity. The 3rd Infantry Division lost 4,500 men during the push to invade france and if my father weren't so stubborn I probably would never have been conceived. ;-)

I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June of 1969. I was seriously injured (traumatic amputation) in a combat related incident during the Vietnam war. I was in my second hitch when I was forced into retirement via chapter 61 ruling. I am rated at 100% permanent and total by the V.A. The Navy has been very good to me, and the VA and DOD have maintained their promises to myself and my family. after all of thses years, CAP gives me an opportunity to return to service to my country, my community, and to God. The idea of saving lives and reducing human suffering without pay has a long heritage in America.

Busted my ACL in high school, two weeks into starting gymnastics. Ironic because mom always worried about me getting hurt wrestling.

After graduate I sat down with all of the recruiters. Air Force said no way. Army said no way. Marine Corps at least tried for a waiver, but came back negative. Navy said I could try lying on the application, but would be on my own if I was caught. Sometimes I almost wish I would have....almost.

Maybe after I finish law school I should try for a professional commission. I've been told a waiver may be easier to get while pursuing one of those.

If you had lied you wouldn't have even been given a discharge, just a release because of a fraudulent enlistment.

I think we've discussed this before, but I always find it interesting that more of our senior member military veterans seem to come from the Army more than the Air Force, or any other branch for that matter.  I wonder why. ???
