Wear of Headgear

Let me just start off by saying I'm not one to manipulate semantics to get my way, but one of my colleagues recently pointed out an interesting discovery: apparently 39-1 has no written policy on when to wear headgear. Now obviously newbies will be promptly explained, wear 'em outside - don't wear 'em inside, but I'm a bit concerned that I'm going senile; 39-1 is bad, but is it that bad or am I missing something?

Yep....another oversight.

That's pretty much it. Most squadron/groups/wings etc will follow a "On outside, off inside." It's also universally accepted that you don't wear headgear on the flightline. My squadron also wears headgear if on the drillpad, regardless of if it's inside or outside. This is also pretty common, but YMMV.

+1 - plenty of places you will, or should, or can, there's no universal rule.

The idea that "flightline = no hat / no salute" causes a lot of arguments based on nothing but hearsay.

As to actual headgear "rules", the problem is that there are plenty of traditions, but also plenty of times those traditions
are broken, with either good reason or because of other traditions.  A "general rule" section about "removing indoors" might
not be a bad idea, though.

The AFI has a nice little table.  2.8,

Outdoors.  Wear
When operating two wheel vehicles.  Wear....unless wearing safety gear.
Indoors.  Don't wear....unless Security forces or other "under arms" or public health personnel conducting inspections.
When commanders specify for safety reasons.  Don't wear.
No-hat areas where to commander specify via supplements.......OPTIONAL.

As a cadet in CAP is the only place I have ever not worn my cover. 10+ years working for a civilian airline on the ramp, and 10 years working the ramp in two branches of the military, wore one every day.

Well what about in four wheel vehicles? I have seen junior grade officers (AF) wear them in their cars, but I'm not sure. I know that while in a flight suit you should wear it (because that's what the officers here wear, since its a NATO pilot training base), but what about BDUs and blues?

At the wearers discretion, wearing a flight suit has nothing to do with it.

What about unicycles?

No because then it would interfere with the proper wear of the ANSI pink safety helmet.

The headgear I have in mind while you're on a unicycle is different:

You must be a Cop, because you aren't funny. >:D

We have a guy here at March ARB who does ride his unicycle here on base.

Doesn't wear a pink helmet, just a standard bike helmet and a vest.

I'm sure my mileage does vary, but--just out of curiosity--what kind of mileage do you get on your unicycle?

Is a four wheel vehicle "out doors"?  Yes you are supposed to wear your headgear inside a car.  I have seen it evenly split and no one .......and I mean no one really cares.
