Title: Anyone know what the 15 biggest squadrons are? (or at least the biggest)
Post by: James Hutchinson on August 16, 2019, 04:05:52 AM
I'm just really wondering what the biggest squadrons are and how many members they have. If you could help me find this out that would be great, thanks!

Everyone has access to the memberships numbers of all units nationally in eServices.

Yeah, if I can sort squadrons by biggest to smallest, that's great please tell me how. If you have to go through every single one individually, you can't seriously expect me to do that.

Are you going to count school squadrons or no? They tend to be larger.

There's no "expectation" you do anything.  If you need that information you can request it from NHQ.
If you want that information, it's available to you, and anyone else interested in taking the time.
NHQ doesn't provide that information publicly in any easily accessible format.

Also, as mentioned, the "largest" units are school squadrons, which are not really comparable to normal units.

Click the 4-way arrow in the statistics box, you can see current numbers and trends going back to 2000.

Sorry for being late to the party.

You can view the number of cadets by Unit by going to the QCUA page and downloading the excel file of data.  https://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/programs/cadets/cpo/quality-cadet-unit-award (https://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/programs/cadets/cpo/quality-cadet-unit-award)

The top three units by number of cadets is.

SWR-TX-802  Sheldon Cadet Sqdn                 185 cadets
GLR-IN-803   Anderson Prep Academy sqdn   164 cadets
MAR-NC-825  NCLA Cadet Sqdn                     149 cadets

All three are school squadrons...

2016: Top 5 squadrons were school squadrons
2017: Top 4 squadrons were school (Same ones) (5 out of the top 6 were the tip 5 from 2016)
2018: : Top 4 squadrons were school (Same ones) (5 out of the top 6 were the tip 5 from 2016)
2019: TBD but unless squadrons had a growth explosion of 30%+ and the top dogs a decrease, it generally will be the same.

155 now. But it's not like all of them show up every week. :)

Yes... this data is from the 2018 report. We'll have to wait until they release the 2019 data.

as far as west of the mississippi, Overlake composite (WAWG) is always boasting 2nd largest with over 100 cadets.

Unless it's well over 100, they aren't even close to being "second".

Squadrons rise and fall... we'll know in the next month or two what the standing is for 2019... seems like there are more squadrons this years at over the 100 mark. Perhaps Ned can share who the top 20 are?

And I wouldn't say Overlake had always over 100 if the currently do...

So Leesburg is the biggest non-800 squadron. That's cool.

Let me just say that being that big comes with its own problems. It's a LOT of work. We've got a great team, but it's still a ton of effort.

Late to the party, had to score the datas.

See the attached. This listing is units with 50 or more "active" members (not patrons), not school squadrons.

The data was current as of 31 July 2019

Thanks! I enjoyed looking through that list.  It let me know that size doesn't always equate to better. It would be good to see another column in the spreadsheet for average number attending meetings and events. My squadron is several down from being at the top in member numbers in our Wing, and have quite a few that do not attend, but keep sending in dues as their way of 'helping'.  Yet small as we are,  we are very active and are often at the top, or near the top,  of our Wing in metrics.

Hey, can we get this in Excel form? Makes it a little easier to get the wanted data.

Right. My unit is down to 19 cadets on the roster from "31" that was there August 31st last year.... and we recruited about 7 since then and had three transfer in.

Sounds kind of bad, except out of the 19 on the roster, all are active and show up (Okay, except for the new college kids but that's different). We have 16/19 that have been to encampment, 16/19 with at least one O-flight, and we're gearing up to do an Open House and "Great Start" program in September. Hopefully recruit 6 or 7 cadets through that. We'll get back to a larger cadet corps, it just will take a while building but my goal for this next QCUA year is to get us to 35 but in a way that keeps us building high quality cadets.

Its pretty amazing that VA has 5 squadrons in the top 20.

:)

Oh, and my unit is #18. w00t!

People will poo-pooh a large unit, but I'm here to tell you: size has its advantages when it comes to spreading the wealth, activity, operations, etc.

The reason I capped this list at units > 50 members was that I didn't want to publish the whole list and have everybody laughing at "the little guys" which make up a huge number of units.

That would be nice.

But several factors come into play, because even in a perfect world, the data would be skewed.  Why?

-- Units don't always take/enter attendance into the app via eServices at things outside of meetings.  Bivouacs, sq trips, ES missions, conferences, etc, don't always "make it" into the attendance system. For example, there was no real easy way for me to get everybody who attended our Wing Conference into the attendance system without hand-keying. Nope.
-- Some people who are otherwise extremely active, don't come to every meeting where attendance is taken. Example: I had THREE CAP events this week that I attended. At only ONE was the attendance app used.  What happens if I show up to different squadrons in my wing during a month and they're already done accounting for everybody in the attendance app? Or they don't even use the attendance app. So I miss out, and my squadron (to which I am assigned) has a member who it looks like he's not very "active," when nothing could be further from the truth.
-- Some units have eshewed the attendance app entirely as "too cumbersome." So they still keep track on paper. Paper is always charged and always has a connection to its database.

Never mind that the aggregate data is not available at the unit, group or wing level.

Taking your great work and mutilating it to fit my own evil plans for global domination (top 50 positions and where WAWG fits into that) (http://www.mcchord.org/temp/boards/cs/Top-50-by-Membership-July-2019.pdf), it looks like your unit is tied for 14th.  Mine is tied for 46th place.

Woah.  TIL... I'm the CDC of the fourth largest unit in CAP.

No wonder I have so much grey hair at 27.....  :o
