Title: Ira C. Eaker Mini Medal Design
Post by: James Shaw on February 03, 2009, 03:31:12 PM
Well here it is folks. The proposed design for the Ira C. Eaker mini medal. I hope you enjoy!

Is it bronze, silver, or gold?

I like the design, but I would try and keep the diamonds together (if you were going to keep that element).  they look like a pair of C/Maj diamonds to me.

I am not sure what type it would be. I would guess bronze.

Both a single diamond (2 collectively on medal ) and double diamond (2 pairs of 2 diamonds were submitted). Not sure if they would want a collective or single layout for the design. Good eye!

I like the '2 pairs' version better myself.
Thanks for keeping us in the loop and giving us a chance to make direct contributions to this kind of stuff.

Eaker was a LtGen on active duty, but was later promoted to GEN (as was Doolittle and Davis). So shouldn't it have 4 stars?

All CAP mini medals, except for the SMV, BMV, DSM, ESA and MSA are a silver oxide color, if I remember correctly. The Comm-Comm is a bright silver.

Very true. Eaker was promoted by Reagan. The three stars were selected because of the current Eaker Award certificate having three stars. Wanted to keep them consistent.

Not to be a back-seat designer, but since I'm not in the front seat on this....

Instead of the globe, what if the landmark transcontintental air-refueling flight was symbolized more directly? Like maybe with a hand passing power (symbolized with a thunderbolt?) to another hand? The receiving hand could sit lower, to symbolize reception.

This symbolism would also serve the dual purpose of symbolizing the passing of knowledge -- instead of the torch, which gets so overused, it's clip-arty.

An example of such a visual metaphor is actually on the seal of my alma mater....

Of course, it's a little more spread out than I'd prefer for the planchet.

The lightning bolt is usually a symbol of communications.  See the AF specialty badge for comm, has a fist with lightning coming out of it over a globe.

Yes, but the SAC insignia had an iron first with lightning bolts emanating from it. And those guys weren't communicating.

Knowledge is power. And sometimes, it's air power, too.

Having seen, up close, what a cell of BUFF's could do in a jungle, I'd say that the SAC guys were very good at communicating.  ;D

I think the design is sharp. I do have to agree on one item, it does look like there are two cadet major diamonds instead of a cadet lieutenant colonel. Other than that little change, run with it.

The design with the two diamonds made it through for the submission to the NB.

Anything you need us to do to help get this through?  I will let my Wing CC know about it and make sure he supports it.

Everyone who supports this can let their wing cc or regional folks know that they like the idea. I do not feel that it will be a problem. It is an allready existing award and would be easy to support.

Once stamped, can they be issued based on number to the recipients?

Mine is #0!  >:D

Good looking, can't wait to replace my Earhart medal.

I like the idea of having it engraved. My wife had my full size SMV engraved with

Major James L. Shaw Jr.
          08/11/07.

Shes a great woman.

Usually a miniature medal is so small and the medal so cheap that engraving is next to impossible.

I suppose you could use a die punch and stamp your number on the back.
Title: Re: Ira C. Eaker Mini Medal Design
Post by: SilverEagle2 on February 12, 2009, 04:50:56 PM
I did not imply that I wanted a number stamped on the back.

I simply wanted to be issued mine first. (In a perfect 0 base world that is)

When I mentioned stamped, I meant imprinted/cut/made.

That was all.

So...what is the status of this medal? Been a while since it was discussed and some would like to see it complete.

Seems the process for the "Achievement Award" was much shorter from proposal to reality.

I thought it was already approved... someone might want to check on Vanguard to see if they've already started production on it. Sometimes they make the initial run and fail to notify the membership.

Spoke with Vanguard about the mini medal. They don't have any idea because it has been put on hold for the moment. The uniform folks are trying to "clean up" some of our medal and ribbon issues. It should still be done but it may be a while.
