Attention, all CAP members in AKWG, CAWG, ORWG and WGWG:

Beginning on January 22, 2018, Alaska, California, Oregon and Washington will be on travel restrictions due to the REAL ID Act of 2005. As a result, the drivers licenses in these states will no longer be accepted for airline travel and people in these states will need either a passport or a passport card to board a flight. This could affect CAP members traveling to the 2018 Legislative Day/Winter Command Council meeting March 1-3 in Washington, D.C., and/or any other CAP travel after Jan. 22 of next year.
Please consider that there will be an expected rush on getting passports/passport cards in these noncompliant states, so everyone is encouraged to apply for a passport/passport card today.

No reflection AT ALL on CAP members in these states...  T' ain't our doin'!

Long over due, IMHO.

Not joining the debate about the ID but I will share my experience of getting a passport and passport card.  Last month, I became a US Citizen and one of the first items after the swearing in was to apply for a passport.  The usual wait time is 4 to 6 weeks for standard processing but the State Dept is warning applicants that standard processing is now 6 to 8 weeks due to the volume of renewals.

This is a copy/paste email that all of the Region CCs have been sending out, but whoever put the email together didn't do all of their homework.

For example, DHS granted Virginia an extension to finish getting their IDs to be REAL ID compliant. As such, residents of Virginia can continue to use their existing licenses to board planes, etc. through October 10, 2018 (source).

And there's no reason to believe those same states won't ask for another extension leading right into
the "full enforcement" deadline in 2020.

https://www.dhs.gov/real-id

One concern being brought up around us is that certain DoD facilities may move to full enforcement
early, even if the state has an exemption.  That mileage is apparently going to vary by facility.

My state has been issuing RealID-compliant DLs and IDs for a couple years now, the result being it
takes a lot longer to get your "real" DL (and it resembles the CAP library card in thickness).

Getting 10s of millions of residents caught up, many who don't even understand the question,
is another story.  I've had a few unit members go in and get a new version because they, or their
cadets, do things on DoD facilities on a regular basis.  Makes me glad I paid the extra $10 and got a passport
card a few years ago.

For the majority of US citizens, not to mention CAP members, it's a non-issue - within most states,
the renewal period for a DL will be well within the implementation period so most conversions will
be "organic", but for a few people, probably those least informed and capable of getting things squared
away most simply, it'll be a hassle.

For example, there are about 15 states with DL validity that is more then 8 years, and one at 16, so
many of those respective residents would have had no reason to expect a new license in advance of full enforcement.

I would imagine 2020 will be a banner year for grandmas turned away at TSA on Thanksgiving.

Not a problem for me, I use my Passport for ID at the airport. No problems what-so-ever. That and TSA-pre. Best $85 I've ever spent!

How long did it take you to get your Pre-check card?

It took my wife right around a week but being an FBI employee she already had a Known Traveler Number. I think mine took around 3 weeks, if that. As much as we travel it is really awesome. We were told that her 14 year old son would need his own but the couple times he's traveled with us they've just let him through with us. Something to keep in mind is it doesn't always work. We flew through Vacations Express and they didn't let us do pre check

My wife can't walk very far without having to use a walker. So we get a wheel chair at airports. We use our passports. They whisk us by the 500 people in line and take us to the handicapped entrance, where we get processed quickly. Sometimes getting older has its advantages.

Don't have a card. Have my KTN which I enter on my reservation. TSA Pre shows up on the Boarding Pass, either paper or electronic.

There's a Pre-Check card?

I have Pre-Check, and got a KTN, but no card, per se.

I also kick myself for not spending the additional $10 for Trusted Traveler thinking my odds of
going out of the country were slim, only to go to Toronto within less then a year, and now again at the
end of the month.

Pro-Tip: When you get a Passport, and apply for Pre-Check, check every box and spend the money.

OK, I asked the wrong question.

How long did it take to complete the process to get a KTN? I have my interview tomorrow. When can I expect to have my number?

Looking back at my notes from Fall 2014, it appears I had a KTN assigned the next day after the in-face interview and fingerprints,
which took all of about 5 minutes.

We didn't get a card, but a letter or email with our KTN. I don't remember which.

OK, that's what I got as well.  I think I had to log into a website to get the KTN the next day, and then a follow-up
letter at some point.

Also, those of us who are active-duty military or DoD civilians can use our DoD ID number as the KTN and our CACs as boarding ID. Civilians have to go into their profile on milConnect and check a box to opt in to Pre-check, but it's once and done. Active duty is automatically activated for it.
