Lorain County Civil Air Patrol Lt. Col. John M. Porter, 58 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away  April 7, 2023, at his residence.

John was born November 8, 1964, in  Lorain County Ohio and raised in Amherst, graduating from Amherst Steele High School with the class of 1982. He has lived in South Amherst since 2021.

John was a member of many institutions including the Stonnington Masonic Lodge #503 where he served as the Past Master (P.M.). He was also a member of the Blue Steel Masonic Lodge #791, Oberlin Masonic Lodge #380 as well as the  El-Rey Grotto, P.M.,the Oberlin Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons, Elyria Commandery, Valley of Cleveland Scottish Rite and Northern Regional Ambassador, Stone City Chapter of the Eastern Star P.P., Madelin Chapter of the Eastern Star P.P.. John also served his community as a  Lt. Colonel in the Lorain County Civil Air Patrol.  He was a  Post Commander of the Firelands Composite Squadron Group 4, and a member of the Ohio Wing Search and Rescue, Lt. Commander. John was also a member of Faith Baptist Church, Amherst, Ohio. Outside of his community memberships John also served as a foster parent for Multi-Breed Rescue. Beyond his many activities, John enjoyed being a ham radio operator, and traveling.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Teresa(nee: Muncy): and his step-daughter Jennifer Bullion of Lakewood,CA., his granddaughter, Aurora Johnson; plus one nephew and four nieces, as well as a brother-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his brother Tarvin Porter II in 2005, his sisters, Donna Sue Schaefer in 2018 and Joan Seiders in 2020; and his parents Tarvin and Mary Beatrice Porter (nee: Sagraves).

Friends may call Wednesday, April 12, 2023, from 4-8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, Amherst.  Funeral services will be held the following day at 11am at the funeral home. Rebroadcasting of services will be available at www.hempelfuneralhome.com . Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst, Ohio.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Multiple Breed Rescue, 37305 Royalton Rd. Grafton Ohio 44044.
