Title: TLC Credit for seniors who were cadets
Post by: Okayish Aviator on February 04, 2022, 06:19:43 PM
I seem to remember at one point that seniors who were cadets were given credit for TLC basic. I'm having trouble finding any documentation to that affect though and I may be completely misremembering. My cadet days ended in 2012 so while it's not been too long ago, I'd be curious to know if that were the case as I sit here eyeballing PD signoffs.

Can anyone help?

As far as I know, TLC was never credited to former cadets.  Depending on how far you went in the Cadet Program, you can advance in rank quicker (I don't remember the specifics), and you are given some credit and follow a special path in completing your Level 1 training.

As said above, no TLC credit, especially now that it's been redone and
the emphasis has been on re-attending regulalry.

"11.2. Special Recognition Programs for Prior Cadets. Achievements that were earned as a CAP cadet
may help fulfill Senior Member Education and Training Program requirements. This applies to all senior
members who earned certain achievements as former cadets, regardless of the dates of their cadet
membership. Equivalency credit will be awarded to former cadets based on specific accomplishments.
These achievements are explained below. For details regarding equivalency credits, please see
Attachments 3 and 4.

11.2.1. Mitchell Award. Those members who earned the Mitchell Award may receive credit for
specific portions of Level I.

11.2.2. Earhart or Eaker Award. Members who earned the Earhart or Eaker Award may receive
the Technician Rating in the Cadet Programs Officer Specialty Track and equivalency credit for some
modules in the Senior Member Education and Training Program. Members who wish to receive specialty
track credit for the Earhart or Eaker Award should send a written request to NHQ/DPR.

11.2.3. Spaatz Award. Members who have earned the Spaatz Award may receive the Senior
Rating in the Cadet Programs Officer Specialty Track, the Yeager Award, and equivalency credit for some
modules in the Senior Member Education and Training Program. Members who wish to receive specialty
track and Yeager Award credit for the Spaatz Award should send a written request to NHQ/DPR."

Cadets who become seniors do not receive TLC credit. In fact, you wouldn't have had the exposure to the material (at least not in a formal training sense) since cadets aren't allowed to be a part of TLC.

I strongly recommend any cadet who becomes a senior to take TLC as soon as able.

Cadets are specifically excluded from attending TLC, even if they're older than 18.

Even if TLC credit were given when you transitioned, it would have long since expired. Definitely take it, and try to get an intermediate class as well.

I think you may be confusing that with the cadet credit for CPPT, which cadets are recommended to take at 17 1/2, and required to take at 18.

That is a lifetime (or two) in terms of cadet programs.

As others have said already, former cadets don't receive any credit for TLC. TLC is targeted at adult leaders dealing with the adult side of cadet programs; so former cadets SHOULDN'T have been exposed to a lot of the items and perspectives covered in TLC. Add on to that the regular changes and updates to the cadet program and the fact that any TLC credit expires after 4 years and we can see why it just doesn't make sense to give former cadets TLC credit.

That said, there are lots of opportunities to attend TLC, especially virtual TLC's which are being hosted fairly regularly it seems. The last one I directed had students from Texas, Mass, Hawaii, Minnesota, and Ohio.

We have hosted a half-dozen virtual TLCs since the start of the pandemic. They have been the best training experiences for senior members that I have been a part of to-date. The wide audience range from across the country has been extremely impactful.

One of the things that I found ironic was that TLC was supposed to be a smaller gathering in the local area (group  echelon preferred); however, what I think we learned was that this was a very narrow collective of like-minded individuals facing similar issues with no influence from outsiders to help create new ideas and new opportunities. The virtual TLC experience gave us far more innovation and creativity while also showing us that we really aren't all that different from other units on a national level. Same problems, but different solutions.

Thanks everyone! I definitely misremembered but that's ok! I'm going to knock out a TLC here soon to finish it up.
