I'd like to introduce you to the Garand Matches. These matches are NRA sanctioned and Civilian Marksmanship Program run... these are held throughout the United States.
Rifles are '03 Springfields, M1 Garands, M1 Carbines and a few more WW1/WW2 types. I've been a range safety officer at these matches for years and have recently begun bringing cadets along. I'd say the reaction to the match and taking in of history has made these matches a cadet favorite.
Mostly these are club shoots. Meaning the club help with instruction, probably can supply rifles and other equipment, and have a safety course attached to the shoot covering rules, mechanic of the rifle and most of all safety. (be sure to check first) Look for a Garand March near you. Sponsor some cadet, ask your commanders and cadet parents for permission of course... be safe and enjoy a fine day making friends and re-sighting for windage.
