Title: Delorme inReach two-way satellite communicator (similar to SPOT)
Post by: kratclif on December 11, 2011, 01:07:30 PM
Greetings,

First-time poster on CAPTalk here. Has anyone used a Delorme inReach yet?

www.delorme.com/inreach (http://www.delorme.com/inreach)

I just bought the Android version (it works standalone or pairs over Bluetooth). Should arrive in the next few days. Any words of wisdom from inReach or SPOT owners?

FYI I tried a SPOT a few months ago but sent it back because it didn't work under tree canopy. GPS got signal but the transmitter wouldn't reach the satellites without a very clear view of the sky  :(

Hopefully I'll have better luck with the inReach device. It's quite a bit more expensive than SPOT though, both in initial cost and monthly fees.

I have a real PLB too for true emergencies, but I want the two-way text messaging and GPS tracking ability as a backup to VHF comms.

Thanks.

Kevin

Hi.  We have been testing the spot from the aircraft and have had great success.  We have not gotten it into the woods yet.  I like what I have seen of the inreach.  Please post us a review once you get it going.  It would be nice to be able to send more than the canned messages.  Anyone have the spot connect?
