Cemetery officials said they decided to cancel this year's wreath-laying after determining there was not a way to mitigate the risks of such an event.

"We could no longer envision a way to safely accommodate the large number of visitors we typically host during this event"

Let's not be Chicken Little here.

The posted article applies to Arlington National Cemetery. I have no doubt that other events may suffer a similar fate, but we should not present this as a nationwide cancellation at this time.

One can hope.

Feed a homeless vet or donate to a vet charity instead of this.

I think you'll find that (finally) WAA have realized that the cause is hopeless.  We received notification a few weeks ago that our local event, usually hosted by my unit, was cancelled.  We had assumed it would be, had even asked WAA what they were planning, and heard nothing.

An announcement eventually appeared on FB - nothing that we did.

Personally, I'm pleased.  I ran our events for three years and enjoyed it.  Then, after getting some feedback from another CT user, I did some digging via Charity Navigator and similar.

As a result of what I found, I no longer participate in any way, including fund raising.  YMMV, but I prefer to send what money I have elsewhere.
