Charles Quentin Creager, who passed away peacefully on August 7, 2018, was the rare renaissance man in his interests and activities, both in actions and words. In acting, he began at Youngstown Civic Theater in productions, such as The Rainmaker and The Emperor's New Clothes. In his later years he was active in Move Over Broadway, performing in Death Takes a Holiday, The King and I, and the international premiere of Light in the Darkness (about Ann Frank's stepsister, Eva Schloss), as well as many others. He was an extra in two Will Smith movies, Hitch and I Am Legend. He also performed in many local commercials and was a miner in the History Channel documentary on the West Virginia miners' cave-in.
In the early 1960's, he was active in the 100-year Civil War reenactments, traveling to battles as the captain of an artillery unit. In 2016 Chuck participated in the search for Amelia Earhart artifacts on the Pacific island of Nikumaroro, as a member of The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery. In local organizations, he has been active in the Civil War Roundtable, founding member of Canfield Roadrunners (completing several marathons), archaeological digs with the Archaeology Department from YSU (including the confederate prisoner of war camp on Kelley's Island, Mt Vernon, and San Salvador), as a member of SCORE (mentoring beginning businesses), Youngstown Reading Radio Services, Civil Air Patrol, and Chatterbox. Chuck was named volunteer of the year for Goodwill Industries and was also active with Second Harvest. He was a member of The Society of American Foresters for over 60 years.
He loved to travel, having visited every continent and was a tour escort for AAA for many years. His travels included sailing on a Russian ice-breaker to work on a science station in Antarctica, climbing Mt. Fuji, and learning to hang-glide with his youngest child. He was also proud of the fact that he had personally seen every president since Herbert Hoover. As a member of Canfield Presbyterian Church, he served on several committees, including session as an elder, and was in the choir for over fifty years. Chuck was born January 7, 1932, to John and Inez (Paff) Creager in Youngstown. He earned his degree in Civil Engineering in Forestry from the University of Michigan. He initially worked for Mill Creek Park, surveying and laying out many of the current gardens, golf courses, and paths, including the Rose Gardens and Mill Creek Golf Course. Then he became a claims adjuster for thirty years for State Farm Insurance.
His parents preceded him in death. He is survived by his sister, Carolyn Creager, of Delray, Florida, by his children, Kevin (Sue) Creager, of Springfield, Ohio, Allyson (Mark) Swaney, of Oxnard, California, and Marla (Don Wilson) Creager, of Canfield, Ohio, by his grandchildren, Marina, Ben, and Trevor Wilson, and Colin (Katie) Creager, Alex (Hannah) Creager, and Laura (Greg) Stewart, and by his great-grandchildren Kylie, Colette, and Emily.
