That's the airplane in the picture. Not the airplane sought.

The -235 doesn't do 750kts at FL390

But a Tu-160 wasn't pictured in the article, Phil. Which was what I was saying.

TWM used a pic of a CN-235 on the article. An airplane not capable of the speeds and maneuvers described in the article.

Hey, what do you want from a hack "news" site who's main function is to feed conspiracy theorists fantasies?

Tyler Rogoway's work generally isn't bad.  I followed him when he was writing for Foxtrot Alpha over at Jalopnik.  His work is pretty good on the whole, generally well researched and, apart from obvious glaring "I'm a civilian, I don't get that" stuff about the military, pretty readable.

That said, TWZ (not TWM, as I previously said) can be uneven with some of the *other* writers.

The guy who said it was a Navy E-6B Mercury is probably on to something. It can fly at FL390.
Of course 6 years on the EC-135C may bias me just a bit... >:D

Phil,  you're on crack.  An E-6B can't make 750+ kts, even in a dive.

750 kts Gnd Spd at FL390 is not hard to do at all. Especially at this time of year when the Jet Stream is down in the OR/WA area.

How many airworthy Blackjacks do the Russians have left? 16 or 18? OR rate of 30% if they are lucky.
I'd wager you the mortgage money that was not a Blackjack.

They got 100 percent hits, too.. all their ordnance hit the ground successfully (grin).

No, the vast odds are that none of these were the aircraft in question, though.
