How does the NCC Placing system work? The last NCC, a Florida Wing team won first place, then the other Florida Wing team was declared the "Grand Champions". So how does that work?

Well, that seems to all be OBE (Overcome By Events), since the whole format has changed. We'll have all new everything when it starts up again.

The format for this year was used in 2015 for the first time.  Unfortunately NHQ decided to identify teams by their chosen nicknames instead of where they were from.  1st place overall were the "Spartans" followed by "Sabre" and third was CA-324.  At least we know who came in third.

By the way, you have to dig really hard to find out the results from 2015.  It isn't even posted on their Facebook site.  There was a link to it in the NCC page but when they updated it for 2017 they removed it for some reason.

I know cadets from both teams but always forgot to ask them.  But what the commander of the grand champions team told me is that their team didn't win first place in any core events but a few electives and still managed to be declared grand champions. While the "1st place" team that got first place in more events than the grand champions and they weren't grand champions. So that's a bit confusing.

The overall winner is determined by a point system and each event (except electives) are scored the same.  1 point for 1st, 2 for 2nd, etc.  The overall winner is the team with the lowest point total.  There is no "grand champion" and "1st place."  The team that won the most events didn't get another trophy for that, just trophies for each event they won.
