I just recently got an Old Style Service Dress Coat. The regs state the new style doesn't wear a wing patch, but nothing says if the old does or does not. The only thing is in 39-1, it shows in the picture the cadet has the wing patch on. Because my coat doen't have the wing patch on it, do I need to put it on just cause it "Old" Style?
Look at Figure 2-2 number 8 of CAPM 39-1.
yes, but do i need to have the patch on the old style?

Yes. The manual is very clear here.
Quote from: CAPM 39-1 Table 6-2. Authorized Badges and Devices, and Proper Placement on the Service Uniform2 Shoulder Patch (Wing/Region/National) 1/2 inch below the shoulder seam on the left sleeve of all coats, jackets, and shirts worn as outergarments and the pullover sweater. EXCEPTION: Shoulder patch is not worn on new-style service coat. 6-14
I hope you have matching trousers for that service coat.
Quote from: CAPM 39-1 2-1. a.... The old-style Air Force service uniform for cadets will not be covered by this phase out rule and will continue to be authorized indefinitely. When old and new items are worn, the coat and slacks/skirt/trousers will be of a
matching material (same shade, weave, and weight). ...
They matched last time i checked. I got the pants when i joined a year and a half ago.
If you received the pants from the free uniform program they won't match. The shade of blue is slightly different.
It was mentioned that the old service coat is a different shade. Could someone knowledgeable pass on to us the various types and shade numbers? I've seen numbers like 1620 and 1625 but how about some of the older ones such as 1608 and 1549 - if those existed!
Here are the most common Air Force clothing shades you'll find:
1505 - khakis (phased out long ago)
1550 - light blue shirt (current)
1084 - VERY old service dress - blue is kinda grayish
1549 - old service dress
1620 - new service dress
1625 - trousers for the light blue shirt combination only
Beware - the Air Force Academy cadet uniforms are another different shade altogether, IIRC. I don't know the shade number, though.
Hope this helps.
Old Shades are
1578 - 100% Polyester
1598 - poly/wool
1608 - poly/wool
New Shades
1620 - poly/wool (NOTE: These are the only shade of pants that can be worn w/the new service coat)
1625 - 100% polyester
These are the few that I know for certain are out there
