Title: new ID card after promitions?
Post by: Woodsy on September 08, 2011, 12:28:35 AM
Does NHQ automatically send out a new card after a promotion, or do you have to request/pay for one through E-services?  If they do, how long does it usually take?

Nope, only one per year, unless you want to buy a new one. Takes a couple weeks...

Are we talking cadets or seniors?

Seniors get a new one when promoted.

Talking SM.  Was promoted to 2d Lt a couple weeks ago and was wondering if I need to do something to get a new card, or just wait for it to come in the mail.

Senior used to get a new one when promoted. When I recently got promoted i waited and waited for a new one, so i called NHQ and asked. They told me no new cards unless i payed or re-uped...

NCRBlues is absolutely correct.  With the Change SM's will only be issued a FREE Id Card when they renew their membership not with promotion unless the Member orders and pays for it.

So we're supposed to walk around with an ID card with the wrong grade?

The only cards they are issuing now are the photo ones, right?

Well, That's completely up to you.  CAP is only paying for the ID on Membership Renewal.  If you want one with the new grade, you have to pay for it.  Civil Air Patrol just didn't want to Budget for promotion related ID cards when the member could just wait a few more months when they renew.

When they did issue new cards upon request, promotion, and renewal they were sending out 150K or more for a membership of 62 thousand.  Big expense when they were cardboard, much bigger expense now that they have photos, holograms, and better quality. Not to mention postal costs which are about 50 cents apiece.

If I get that thin flimsy thing for the next ID card, I'm going to just stop offering it at the gate. They already have made comments about this "cheesy" card, with it's corrupt looking gif graphic on it. One asked me if I just made it. 95% of the time no one says anything anyway. But..  it's a joke.

I can certainly understand the budget concerns.  I have no problem paying 3 bucks for a card, just didn't know if I needed to or if one was already on the way.  Thanks for the help.

I have a major problem paying $3 for a flimsy worthless id card that bends in the mailbox even before I get it.

The need to fix that problem fast.

It's not worthless. Some committee determined it's worth $3  >:D  .. But we do need to solve the cheesy ID card problem.

I got my bent ID card that I mentioned before.  About a week later, I got this ID card.  YES, I have a photo in e-Services and the first card had it.

Do you *still* have it in there? Or did it get yanked because you complained about the ID card and someone turned it into "the photo is bad"? ...

If you need something with your new grade on it, what about - you can print the temporary card from eServices or the 101 from Ops Quals and put one of them with your photo ID. So far, have you had a problem with someone questioning the card because of the rank shown on it?

So far I haven't had the issue, but I regularly have to go through a base gate, and the gyards are attentive enough that they sometimes question members in a CAP uniform showing a CAC with a different grade.

It's one thing to not issue a new photo card when they are always issuing a library care with a promotion, but now that they are only allowing and issuing the photo cards, they should send one when you get a bump.

They saved money on me when I did two multi years in a row.

Since they removed the hologram thinger and they don't have a protective sheet over the front of the card, I really think we should splurge on ID cards that don't arrive FOLDED or aren't going to make people checking IDs go "was this printed out of a laser printer?".  Other than being annoying, this could set off alarms with base security or another some such people.  Isn't that WHY WE NEED THEM?  Internally, we rarely need a photo ID.

Also, since there seems to be confusion over the issue of promotions and ID cards.  When you get a promotion, e-Services should e-mail you and say "Congratulations, sucker!  You won't be receiving an updated ID card.  Click here to order a new ID card."  I think it's a good idea and a decent solution to get the word out since it was NOT that way for many years.

Optionally, they could add a line that says something like "Click here to feed Vanguard.  They have lots of goodies with your new rank insignia on them!"  A referral commission would go to me because it was my idea and I would donate the money to cadet encampment, flight, and NCSA scholarships.

This is especially important when you consider a lot of Seniors find out they were promoted when they notice it randomly on eServices.

Yes, but the odds are you don't find out about the promotion randomly by accident, and do you have to pay for your new ID?

Well......you should NEVER find out about your promotion randomly....if you do then bad on you! (unless it was a advanced promotion that they kept secret from you).

Secondly.....CAP is not a cheap endeavor.....if $3 is going to kill you (not to mention all the other costs for your uniforms) them maybe you should decline the promotion.

Bad on me to find out about a promotion randomly?  How about bad on the commander who doesn't pay care enough to check and call me when it comes through.

Paying for a new ID card isn't going to kill anyone, it's more a principle thing.  It is what it is.

I'm scared to see what the Tyvek-ish thing looks like from my recent renewal.

The process has changed.  That's what people need to know and that's what has to be spread in the field.

They change a lot of things that don't get to the average member, but this impacts each person.

I really do not think the compliant here is against the $3 cost. I think the main complaint is the quality, or lack of on the ID cards...

Quoteor lack of it on the ID cards...
Fixed that for you.
Exactly. The lack of it. It's embarrassing at times, to hand over something that looks like it was made in a Six Dollar Printer. What they had before, at least had substance to it. From what this sounds like now, it's like the cheesy 'temporary' cards you peel off the paper in solicitations for memberships, credit cards, etc.

Post by: lordmonar on September 08, 2011, 06:57:46 PM
I just got my new CAPID a few days ago......and I don't see anything wrong with the quality.

The printing is clean and clear, the photo is sharp and the layout is proffessional.

It is printed on plastic that is thinner then a credit card....but that is no different than many membership cards I get from other organisations.

Comparing my CAP ID with my military Retired ID card....the CAP ID looks more professional and is easer to read.
If you are concerned about how thin it is.....just run it through a laminator and be done with it.
I have had ZERO problems with getting onto base with it.....and I don't give a fart in a wind storm what the gate guard think about it.

They new card is kind of flimsy, but I have never actually used my CAP membership card for anything. I may have used it a handful of times as a cadet, but never as a SM. I do understand some people use it all the time though.

IMHO they made the right choice by not sending them out with promotions, It saves money and at the end of the day, you really don't need grade on it anyway. Simple solution: remove grade from the card. Problem solved.

To add a little fuel to this I just got out my calipers and my wallet. My IN drivers license is .036" thick, that's 20 ga for you metal heads out there. My debit card is .030 or 22 ga. My old but still current for the next 11 days CAPID is also .030. My new ID is .019, just over half that of the old one. I think that's thinner than the aluminium Cessna uses to build airplanes. For reference, printer paper is .004 which is only 1/5 that of the new ID card.

Other then that it fits the bill required of a CAP ID card.

A few years back I was issued a "flimsy" retired ID from Pendleton.  Got challenged a few times but told them, "You guys issued it to me".  Fortunately, Uncle Sam has decided to remove you Social Security number from the cards and that fixed the problem.  Short version, CAP isn't the only organization that issues flimsy, cheesy, cards.
