Title: Highest Ranking member of CAP
Post by: SAR-EMT1 on December 14, 2007, 05:19:16 AM
This is simple:  what is the highest rank at your unit? Capt? Lt Col? Col? BG?
This question applies to both SMs and Cadets (where appropriate)

Second question: For those of you with RM members (AD/NG/Res/Retired etc)
what is the highest rank there? Any E-8s or E-9s? Any O-6's or above?

I know CAP has had some RM Flag Officers. Are any currently on the books / active (In CAP)?

------
For my own unit: We have several former NCOs the highest being a retired CSM (Army E-9 at HQ)

The highest CAP member "on the books" is a Lt Col (never seen in my 6-years, in fact the dues checks come in from another state)
The highest "active"  Seniors are Captains
Highest cadet: C/ SMS

Present Unit
Highest CAP SM: Col (I think theres a few, haven't checked in a while)
Highest RM: unsure honestly
No cadets

Immediate past unit (FL153, Headquarters Group 8)
Highest CAP SM: Lt Col
Highest RM: again, unsure, everyone did their job and didn't really mention RM rank either present or prior
Highest Cadet: C/Col (first one in that unit, and first in the entire group since 2004 or so, second overall in the group), though that changed when he turned SM about a week before my transfer, highest cadet in the group then was C/Maj

That's a trick question.  When I think of people "in my squadron" I don't pay attention to who is on the roster, but who is at the meetings.

So, here's my breakdown both ways:

On the roster:
Highest CAP Grade: 2 X Col
Highest RM Grade: I THINK one of those CAP Cols was an AF 0-5 or 0-6, we have a Ret. E-7 and some other prior service E-4s but nothing fancy...
Highest Cadet Grade: C/Lt Col

Entire breakdown on roster:

Col = 2
Lt Col = 2
Maj = 5
Capt = 7
1st Lt = 3
2d Lt = 5
SM = 15

C/Lt Col = 2
C/1st Lt = 1
C/2d Lt = 2
C/SMSgt = 1
C/MSgt = 2
C/SSgt = 1
C/SrA = 2
C/A1C = 6
C/Amn = 18
C/AB = 3

Real Attendance (the almost every meeting crowd)

Col = 0
Lt Col = 1
Maj = 1
Capt = 4
1st Lt = 0
2d Lt = 3
SM = 10

C/Lt Col = 0
C/1st Lt = 0
C/2d Lt = 1-2
C/SMSgt = 0-1
C/MSgt = 2
C/SSgt = 0-1
C/SrA = 1
C/A1C = 3
C/Amn = 18
C/AB = 3

Lt Col, who is a retired USAF Lt Col.  Two Maj, one of which is a MSgt in the ANG (and the other is me).

Two C/Lt Col cadets, both away at college.  Next highest are a couple of C/2d Lt, nothing in between.  I need to start poking my Mitchell cadets with a stick to get them to promote.

Highest CAP Officer: Lieutenant Colonel
Highest Cadet: Cadet Captain (Used to have a Cadet Colonel a couple years ago)
Highest RM Member: Retired Navy Captain (O-6)

On the side of RM members, we've got the retired Navy O-6, one retired Marine Corps O-5, two USN E-8's (one active duty, the other, our commander, retired).  A bunch more I'd add, but they're not as high as the members already mentioned.

This really doesn't fit here, since I am retired, but I had to share it, since your asking if any RealMilitary general/flag officers are in units:

Back in '82, I served as a staff officer at the Georgia Wing Class "B" encampment at Ft. Benning.  The Encampment CC was Lt. Col. Robert Butler -- a pretty cool guy, let me tell you!  My 2nd Lt's bars were so new they still had the price tags on them, but Col. Butler showed me around post, took me with him to the PX and the Commissary, etc.  He insised that I (along with his staff) call him "Bob" at all times unless cadets were around.

Here's the kicker -- I didn't find out until later that "Bob" was a brigadier general in the Army Reserve.  Had I known that, I'd never have addressed him by anything other than "Sir."

I've never been on a first-name basis with a general since.  (Bob put me up for the Meritorious Service Award for my work at encampment, by the way.)

Many moons ago I had the great opportunity to meet Gen James Jones (then Lt Gen, and the Military Asst to the SECDEF). I was working an Airfield Control Group in Kosovo. I remember his comments as he introduced himself to me (like he needed one!).

QuoteGood Morning Cpl Gardiner, What's your given name?

Ummm Timothy, Sir

Great! Mind if we are on a first name basis? I'll call you, Timothy and you can call me General!

I know it's been said before but I admit it caught me off guard!
