Title: Are new members' emails vetted?
Post by: Eclipse on June 13, 2017, 02:49:38 PM
It's been so long since I signed up I don't even vaguely remember, but are new members to the board required to
provide an email address that at least pings-back a verification that they have access to that address?

In light of some of the drive-bys we get here that appear to have publicly identifiable information that links back
to CAP membership, I just find it difficult to believe that people who value their CAP membership would jump in here
and start making inflammatory comments, etc., as if there were no ramifications at the end of the conversation.

Maybe it's a sign of the times, or total lack of self-awareness about the Internet "not being real".

Sure anyone can make up a disposable email, but creating a persona that tracks-back to other identifiable websites,
etc., isn't nearly as easy, which always lends me to believe some of these drive-bys are either compromised accounts
or people impersonating someone they have a beef with.

Pro tip:  Google never forgets...anything.

I believe I had to verify my email when I signed up....10+ years ago.

There's an email verification step.  I still have it in my inbox from when I joined a month ago.

I personally wouldn't call that 'vetting', as email addresses are trivial to generate, but there is an email verification step.

Yes, there is a "vetting" process, but Eclipse has it nailed - new addresses are easy to get, and the process doesn't go any farther than verifying that the address works. That's an Admin function, not a Mod function, so I don't play in that arena. I did pick up on the similar screen name of our most recent miscreant, investigated, and he's been banned.

Not sure how good the email vetting is. I had a senior member signup and NHQ made a transcription error in entering her email. Then the fingerprint card got bounced and the only attempt to inform her was via the bad email. Surprise you're a patron member... (We did get it all resolved)

NHQ always contacts me as CC when an app has an issue.

I think the last two posts are missing the issue.

I thought the issue is "how good is the email of someone joining CAPTalk is being vetted by CAPTalk." The last two posters have answered as if the issue here is "how good is the email of someone joining CAP is being vetted by CAP NHQ."

The original question was for captalk, not NHQ, but FWIW:
When NHQ had a question with my application, they emailed myself and the squadron commander.  I typed and printed the application form so there wasn't any ambiguity on my email, but emailing the squadron commander (or, whoever is listed as the designee) seems like a good redundancy check.
