I noticed Eclipse posted a three part series on this subject, but it was missing content and locked over time.In early 1987 I joined Civil Air Patrol. That summer, I spent a week with my grandparents in DC and I shared the news. My grandfather disappeared to the basement and returned with the May 1956 edition of National Geographic Magazine with a full spread about the program. I looked at the magazine the entire week and was so excited to be a part of it.
I wish I had asked for it or sought it out when they passed a few years ago.
Fortunately, there is this cool thing call the internet where I found that edition online. Even more cool is I spent less than $20 and got two copies of it from eBay.
Here it is. Someone scanned it and uploaded it. (https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPrRv_FR7INlv1a7X2bo5VCMQZwuqSQ6Qxl-LeAcvDDBSqYbsfOw2gGLz5SIPQvLw?key=ZE1MUlA2UWVTbFAybGpqcnlVTVpWWThQTUtBaGRn&fbclid=IwAR1sbzUu_uaMEAOzmwlKJMtMfVoLgsPutkUxJ9nfvaNZLujohS18OTDdYlw)

I joined in the fall of 1987. My grandmother got me that National Geographic and Colby's "This is your Civil Air Patrol" book.
Grandparents are so great!
