The CAP newb again...
While reading the "really big thread" a few posters mentioned more USAF control/oversight and that CAP is not a full-time USAF/AUX. Everything I've been told and on the CAP.gov sites talk about us being the "official" auxiliary.
So, someone please explain to this rookie what we are? In English. Trying to decipher some of the abbreviations here have taken me some time (I'm getting there tho').

P.S.- What's the proper slang for a new guy? Rookie, n00b, greenie? I know that my buddy was called "butterbar" when he was a 2nd LT in the Army.
CAP is the official auxiliary of the us air force, but much as the national guard can function as a state entity, or a federal entity CAP can function in two roles. In these roles CAP can function in its Auxiliary status, or it can function in its corporate status.

Basically, it boils down to this. CAP is the USAF Auxiliary when we are on a federally funded mission. At all other times, we are a non-profit, congressionally chartered corporation that wears Air Force uniforms and acts a little like them.

Just to be picky, we are the AF Auxiliary whenever we are on an AF-approved mission whether or not it is federally funded (there are options for AF status for missions funded by local or state authorities).

does not apply to a true newbie. N00bs are people that have been around a while and should know what they are doing, but don't due to ignorance. Newbies have an excuse... N00bs are just well... n00bs.

So then, would the correct one-liner to the question "What is CAP?" be:
"CAP is the part-time, volunteer auxiliary of the USAF, and we also provide support for DHS & the DEA."
What constitutes an AF mission? SAR?
We are acting as the auxiliary of the US Air Force anytime we are performing a mission for the Air Force or ANY agency of the United States Government.
DEA drug missions are Air Force Auxiliary missions, so is SAR, and DR if called up in support of the USAF or FEMA. If we are called out under the terms of a Memeorandum of Understanding with a State Emergency Management Agency, then no, we are not acting as the USAF Auxiliary.

Depends on how the MOU was written and the specific mission request received at the NOC. It is possible to get AFAM status for non-AF funded missions (B14 missions, for example).

To sum it up.....
Basically, we're only the Air Force Auxiliary under very certain circumstances. This came about a few years ago. The rest of the time, we're Civil Air Patrol, Inc.
The USAFAux thing is more of a recruiting tool, and an old, bad habit, then anything.
It seems like that most of the time when we're on a mission we're AUX-ON, but regular meetings and such were AUX-OFF. Is that right?
