Title: Finding Carla - Book About the Oien/Corbus Plane Crash
Post by: sardak on July 02, 2016, 06:31:02 PM
The book "Finding Carla" by Ross Nixon, about the 1967 Oien/Corbus plane crash, was just published. The plane crashed in Northern California with a family of three onboard. It wasn't found for almost 10 months. When it was, a diary revealed that a 16 year old, Carla Corbus, survived for some 54 days. The search and diary were significant factors in creating the US laws requiring ELTs.

Ross interviewed family members, searchers and one of the two people who found the wreck and diary. Some of these people have died since he talked with them. The book also contains the full diary, as well as letters the family wrote while waiting to be found.

There have been two CAP Talk threads on the search:

The book is (or will be) available from the publisher, Aviation Supplies and Academics, as well as from your favorite online sources in paper and electronic versions. The author created a Facebook page for the book: https://www.facebook.com/Finding-Carla-by-Ross-Nixon-242110152795779/ (https://www.facebook.com/Finding-Carla-by-Ross-Nixon-242110152795779/)

I'm credited in the book because I contributed some original research I've done on ELT history, but I don't get a cent from sales. It's a case study, thoroughly described in the book, that I believe pilots and SAR personnel should read.
