So I'm waiting to promote so I can take my tests for my Mitchell, I know that I won't have to worry about this right now but my cadet commander has a problem with his epaulet sleeves. I know the dots are to show where the center of the epaulet sleeve is and where to put the insignia, but when I look at the dot on my own (A pair was given to me by one of our former officers) the dot looks like it'd be visible with 1st Lt miniature insignia.

Is this how its supposed to be or do I have to get new epaulet sleeves?

Also, any recommendations for shoulder boards on class A's? Would an officer's service jacket work better than enlisted?

The dot may show but honestly don't worry about it.

As for the service coat, you are better off with the enlisted jacket.  The cadet shoulder boards are attached with velcro and they will sit and look better on a jacket without the epaulettes.  The velcro will need to be sewn on (just a few stitches in each corner) so it doesn't fall off.
