Title: Civil Air Portal Refugee's Thread
Post by: Major Carrales on November 01, 2006, 01:18:20 AM
We gather, We the Portaleers,
Taken from our place,
With no Celebration, no Cheers.

But, from our posts we will not balk,
For we liveth again,
Here at CAP TALK

Many Portal regulars will no-doubt take refuge here.  I had some good relationship going over there across the nation.  Let us all meet here and insure our links are not severed.

Refugees??? or illegal aliens?  Right off hand it looks like many of the Portal members have already come over to CAP Talk. But can CAP Talk replace the Portal? I don't think so.

Back during Katrina local people in my area started calling the influx of people to our area "Revacuees."  I tried to enter into the American Lexicon, but it stayed pretty local.

As for replacing the "Portal?"  I don't think replacing is the word...rather the Portaleer presence will be assimulated into CAPTALK.

Resistance is futile???

Well, looks like this will be my home for a while.

All of my best to Tedda and a well deserved "Thank you for all that you have provided for us" at that, I to find that the only folks that seem to be posting to this and similar threads on CAP Talk today seem to be former portal people. I was just a fly on the wall in the Portal, listening and learning but never posting .

To those natives of CAP Talk, I thank you for giving us this peace and sanctuary. I can think of some other boards wherein the "residents" would have snappy quips and comments for those of us that are actually grieving. This speaks to me of the character of this board and its members. You know what they say about first impressions. Thanks for the new space and I firmly believe that if moderated well, both the native CAP Talkers and Portaleers (?) (not like Langoleers) may benefit from the discussions that will take place here.

Tedda, If you ever make it to Lexington, KY., message me first because I would like to shake the hand of the man that formed the Portal!

While I was a frequent lurker of the Portal, I don't think I was ever officially a Portalperson.  I didn't have my own custom Portalperson icon, nor did I post on the forums... I just read a lot.  I, too, miss CivilAirPortal and feel that there is a gap in the online CAP community.

In any case, know that all of you Portal revacuees (I do like that term!) are welcome here at CAPTalk.  Discuss everything, discuss often, and post with professionalism.  Welcome aboard!  :)

I never got a portal person  :(, out of jest I had suggested Service Cap with cloud-n-darts and short sleeve shirt.

Hey Padre...I'm glad you could make it.  What is cool about this thread is that I, and others, will be able to look it up as a quick reference for missed PMs.  I'm needing to PM Al Sayre and Grant Henninger as a matter of fact.

Lurkers are welcome here too.  There were many lurkers...some days, then the Portal was hitting some 30 on line at once, a good 12 or so would be lurkers.

Revacuees ;)  This term was originally a slip of the mouth by a reporter for a local radio station, then it took on additional meaning when Rita came through and the evacuated of New Orleans that were in Houston et al were on the move once more.

Man, after putting in a month and earning a bunch of stripes I've been kicked back down to recruit level.  I'm actually an eyewitness (so to speak) of the destruction of the portal as I was reading a thread when it happened.  All of a sudden it started asking for an administrators password and after about a half hour started looking much like it does now.

I enjoyed the portal quite a bit as it was a very active site.  No offense to some other sites but the blog-based sites aren't terribly easy to comment in and read compared to the portal.  This site isn't bad but didn't seem to have a lot of use or about as much as the CAP board on military.com which has never been terribly well utilized.

So, I'll give this one a try.

River, I know what you mean about your stripes, I was half way to getting my 3rd stripe which I would have gotten in December, December of 2008 that is.

Inasmuch as we will all miss having The CivilAirPortal to hang around at, and we should all thank Tedd for his efforts with it, he's a world class Auxie...

...I think we all need to thank Pylon (http://captalk.net/index.php?action=profile;u=2) for being so gracious in letting us all bemoan our 'loss' here at http://www.captalk.net (http://www.captalk.net)! As Lt Col Horning (http://captalk.net/index.php?action=profile;u=33) so glaringly pointed out, we shouldn't be complaining about the loss of a CAP forum on another CAP forum.

Mike, if we can be of any support to you with the additional bandwidth demands, do not hesitate to let us know. I'm sure we can come up with some creative fundraising ideas.

I don't see any harm in talking about it.  Considering so many had "dual membership."

The Portal was, as corny as this sounds, a beloved place and I don't see any harm in transferring that to CAPTALK.

In any case, this thread will sink into the oblivion of the back pages in enough time as PORTAL PEOPLE slowly begin the process of originating, discussing and exchanging ideas on  threads here.

I think this is the start of a great relationship.

Another refugee here. I've been on leave and only recently checked in to the portal only to find it non-functional, real bummer. On portal I was commandodoc, I think I've signed in as sandman reflecting more of my profession (anesthesia/sedation). I've been here for awhile but have only observed, now it's time to shift colors to this new blog.

Hi all, been over here a couple days and had a few posts already. I thought it would be prudent though to officially register for legal residency in this fine establishment. I enjoy reading many of the posts and will upon occasion jump in with my .02. I do wish though that I would have asked for a "PortalPerson" before the Portal closed, but I was waiting until this Saturday to actually be promoted to 2LT to request one. Oh well life goes on.

Just a quick question. Of all the members here that live in south and central Texas who is planning on being at the Lackland air show this weekend. My squadron is coming down from Austin. Just curious.

I was big on the Portal, I think I came here once via a search...I neglected to join basically because I was a "regular" at too many forms as it was.  Some might say I was addicted.  The same sometimes goes for Wiki's.   Nevertheless, the search revealed that most CAPTALEKers were in the PORTAL.

It seems now that the Portal is gone the combined presence of us all here probably make up one of the largest on-line CAP communities (the other pantheons being CADET STUFF and CAPBLOG).

As an asside, I find the tenor of some of the NON-CAP centered communities, like those forums where there is a "CAP room" among other items, to be dismissive, insulting and anti-CAP.

A search once led me to one forum where every thread called CAP "posers and pretenders."  When I tried to explain that CAP is only what it is and the "posers and pretenders" were looked at with distain even with in CAP...I was flamed like a heretic and then banned from the board.  My posts and threads replaced by empty ones or simply deleted. :(

So, when I make a statement about "enemies of CAP" ( see http://captalk.net/index.php?topic=963.0 (http://captalk.net/index.php?topic=963.0)) I know they are there.  That is why we have to police ourselves and be the "officers" we are.

Hi Y'all,

Another refugee... and I find the (very mild) grumping by the original inhabitants here a bit amusing, because in my memory, "CAPTalk" was a place where wild flamefests and constant word wars drove everyone away (a dozen or more years ago, when it was an email list).
That it has calmed down and provides what looks like a very professional and civilized cyber-place is very heartening..:-)

This is NOT the same CAPTalk as that email list years ago.  Jerry and I, two random CAP members, founded this discussion board from scratch a year and a half ago, when CAPBoard closed down and there was, at the time, no CAP-specific, all-missions-inclusive discussion board out there.  We have no relations to the old CAPTalk, or the old CAPBoard, or any other discussion community out there.  I just thought I would clear that up so there is no confusion.  This board has always been an accepting and professionally-minded community.  We've never had any problems with out-of-hand postings and flaming.

I hope none of you formal Portalpeople, either, think that you're not welcome here.  You're MORE than welcome at this community by all of us who run CAPTalk.  Hope there's no confusion there either.  Make yourselfs at home!

WELCOME!    ;)

enother (former) portal person junkie.

I never failed to read the posts  on the portal on a daily basis since I found that page of the universe. CA found a way to distribute information to the masses that were not available anywhere either officially or unofficially. The portal did contribute to many, many discussions that made us better "officers" and was relatively balanced between both the idea that TP was blatantly trying to take control of CAP and that CAP needs someone to take control before it implodes on itself.

I do believe that some of the ranting on all the blogs has been destructive. Anyone and everyone has the opportunity to read a blog- a commander, a CAP/USAF officer, someone from the pentagon, or even a Capitol Hill rep that may have control over CAP and DOD budgets.  Really, truly, if you are not posting a comment to help and to offer constructive criticism- plus an occasional ramble and a sermon or two- please think before you vent and spew.

In the mean time, I will remain Badger Bob, The Supply Guy.  Since I am privileged to be a squadron mate of CA, I will continue to lean on him tell he creates a promised portal person for me.

I hope to add to this and other forums as a auxilarist extraordinary.

I'm a CAPortal refugee!

Well, not really... I had only been registered there a couple weeks, and I only had a few posts (my user name on CAPortal was "Erdrick").

Still, welcome everyone to CAP Talk, it's nice to see this place hoppin'.

Hello.  My name is John and I'm a Portalholic.

I realized I had hit bottom when Citizen Airman was hauled off by the Authorities in a black CAP van with dark tinted windows.  I knew we'd see him someday, but when we do, he will have had his lobotomy and will be but a shadow of his former self, walking around babbling incoherently, and wearing his double-breasted uniform.

I didn't want that to happen to me, so I decided to get some help.

So here I am.

You'll have to remove my nervous system in it's entirety before I will be coaxed to wear that uniform.

Major John
It wasn't an official CAP van. It didn't have the blaze orange triangle on the roof. We all know that black vans with tinted windows are only used by IG staff.

Don't walk alone. The Black Van was spotted in my neighborhood!

Welcome aboard, Kach.  Wondered where you were.  Most of the regular posters(?) from Portal have showed up here in the last couple of weeks.
