Lt. Col. Gary Nussey, MD
San Angelo Composite Squadron
Texas Wing

Dr. Gary Arthur Nussey died unexpectedly on Friday, July 19, 2024 as the result of a blood clot. He was surrounded by his loving family as he left this world.

Dr. Nussey was born in Mount Clemens, Michigan on July 30, 1956 to Chester and Doreen Nussey. He spent the majority of his childhood in Granada Hills, California, where he played high school basketball and won an All State Speech competition. He graduated from Kennedy High School in 1974, then went to college at Rice University in Houston, Texas, where he majored in English and met Cynthia Merriman. They were married on May 20, 1978, a week after he graduated from college. Gary had a heart of service and developed the desire to become a physician early in his life. He achieved that dream and graduated from The University of Texas McGovern School of Medicine in 1983, then completed his residency at Waco Family Medicine Residency in 1986.

Dr. Nussey began his medical practice in Monahans, then spent 10 years in Snyder before moving to San Angelo in 2001, where he worked at Shannon Clinic. He cared for the people of West Texas from birth and throughout their lives, and took great joy from his work. He completed many medical mission trips to Central America. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and a skilled private pilot, and achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel. He spent several years in command of the San Angelo Composite Squadron, where he mentored many cadets and passed on his love of aviation and service to others.

As a man of deep faith, he was active in the Church. He was an Elder at Christian Church of San Angelo, then he taught Sunday School at Grape Creek Baptist Church. He also served on the board of Cornerstone Christian School. His hobbies included model trains, photography, and running.

Dr. Gary Nussey is survived by his wife, Cynthia Nussey of San Angelo; his sister, Bonnie Nussey of Snyder; and his children, Dr. Sandra Hansen and her husband Jeffrey Hansen, who reside in Syracuse, New York; James Nussey, who lives in Roanoke, Texas; Andria Nussey and her fiancé John Alex Villarreal of San Angelo; and Krista Nussey and her partner Carter Bristol of Fort Worth, and one granddaughter, Kira Mathews of San Angelo.
