Please keep Major Phillip Aye in your thoughts and prayers. Major Aye was stricken with a major bout of pneumonia while at National Blue Beret and had to be hospitalized in St. Louis while en route home to Kansas earlier this month. He's currently in critical condition and on a ventilator.

Phil is the commander of the 77th Composite squadron in Emporia and the husband of the Kansas Wing commander, Col. Regena Aye.

Anyone wishing to send a card or a letter can either send them to the KSWG Wing HQ or can send them to me and I will forward them on.

My address is :

"And Saint Attila raised the Holy Hand Grenade up on high saying, "Oh Lord, Bless us this Holy Hand Grenade, and with it smash our enemies to tiny bits. And the Lord did grin, and the people did feast upon the lambs, and stoats, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals, and lima bean-"

" Skip a bit, brother."

"And then the Lord spake, saying: "First, shalt thou take out the holy pin. Then shalt thou count to three. No more, no less. "Three" shall be the number of the counting, and the number of the counting shall be three. "Four" shalt thou not count, and neither count thou two, execpting that thou then goest on to three. Five is RIGHT OUT. Once the number three, being the third number be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade to-wards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuffit. Amen."

Phil had a very bad day today. He had a lung collapse and was rushed into surgery to reinflate. Tomorrow they do a tracheotomy so he can breathe easier. Still in ICU and critical.

Gena (Col. Aye, we were cadets in the same unit back in the day) has set up an update page to keep folks appraised of what's going on. Here's the URL:

Thank you.  Prayers are on the way.  My son just attended Blue Beret and had only good to say about the Col. and Maj.  He said, "Dad, we are family, we are Blue Beret."  Enough said.  Please prayer for them and theirs.  Thank You.

All,

Col. Aye added a new update to Caringbridge regarding Phillip's condition today. It's not good.

Phillip succumbed to his illness and passed away just after midnight.  He fought a valiant fight against pneumonia and ARDS.  Phillip's father called him "Tiger" and he certainly fought like one over the last couple months.  As arrangements are made, I will post them to the site so that those who would like to attend his services can do so.  I appreciate the kind wishes, prayers, and support we have received from our friends and family during this difficult time.  Your comments were both comforting and inspiring.  May the memories of the good works Phillip did encourage us to give of ourselves as he gave of himself.  May the stories of his adventures rest in our hearts and make us smile when we think of him.  May the tales of his escapades bring a bright spot to us in the future as we remember him fondly.

I personally met Maj Aye at my first NCR Encampment when it was held at Camp Dodge in Iowa a few years back.  I can tell you from first hand that the stories that are on the Caring Bridge have the Phillip touch.  he always had the cadets first and formost in his priorities.

Major Aye will be missed deeply.

BLUE SKIES my friend.

Thanks for getting the head's up out, Hawkeye. I got busy this morning and failed to check Caring bridge before I left for work. I hit the ground once i got there and didn't get the word until late morning.

On a personal level, Phil and Gena have been like brother and sister to me for years now and this is like losing one. For Kansas Wing, and the Emporia unit that Phil commanded, it's another kick in the guts, having lost another one of our own so soon. Both are still reeling from the losses of Chaplain Veazy and Ed Hill in the last year.

There simply aren't words...

I met Major Aye while attending the 2008 NSC.   Was impressed by his character and his passion for CAP.  While I did not have the privilege of serving with him or knowing him better, I have heard great things about him from members of the Kansas Wing and the NCR.

My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Col Regena Aye, and the members of the Aye family as well as with the members of KSWG and all those in CAP whose lives have been touched by Phillip.

I've got to correct my earlier post, Phil was in 2nd Battalion, 504th PIR. 3/504 didn't go to Honduras when the Sandinistas invaded.

Some friends of his have created a memorial video for him, I thought I'd pass them on here:

Phillip H. Aye, Jr.  July 18, 1968-October 8, 2009.  After a courageous battle with pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome, Phillip passed way at St Anthony's Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri on 8 October 2009.  Phillip was born in Pensacola, Florida but spent most of his childhood in Allen, Kansas and Emporia, Kansas.  He graduated from Emporia High in 1986.

Phillip joined the US Army and departed for basic training shortly after graduation.  After basic training he attended jump school at Fort Benning, Georgia and was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg.  Phillip also graduated from the Escuela de Paracaidismo de Honduras.  Phillip served as a scout/sniper in the 2/504 PIR until a double parachute malfunction on 27 October 1989 separated him from his beloved Army.  Phillip recuperated and attended college, earning an Associate of Arts from Allen Community College in May 1998 and graduating from Emporia State University in December 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts in History with honors and Bachelor of Science in Education with honors.   Phillip worked for USD420 in Osage City as a substitute teacher and junior high football coach for a short time.  He also taught as an adjunct for Allen Community College for a few semesters.  Phillip married Regena Bailey on December 3, 2000 in Osage City, Kansas.

Phillip loved music, shooting sports, muscle cars and grilling. Phillip had a zest for life and a sense of humor that was admired by many and will be greatly missed.  He loved to drink coffee and shoot pool with his best friends Robert Stockton and Jeff Rensing.  Dedicated to helping others, Phillip touched the lives of more than fifty teen boys through his service as a foster parent and countless others nationwide as a Civil Air Patrol (CAP) officer.  A patriot to the core, the mission always came first with Phillip and he always found the time and energy for an ELT mission, a blood run, to help a cadet attend an activity, or to teach marksmanship.  In CAP, Major Aye earned many honors including Outstanding Tactical Officer at the 2005 Nebraska Wing Encampment, Kansas Wing Aerospace Education Officer of the Year 2003, three Commander's Commendations, the Search and Rescue Ribbon, the Disaster Relief Ribbon, the Find Ribbon, and the Exceptional Service Award.  Major earned the Gill Robb Wilson Award, CAP's highest award for senior member professional development, in 2009.  Major Aye served as the Homeland Security Officer for Kansas Wing and the commander of the 77th Composite Squadron.  Major Aye attended more than ten encampments, National Blue Beret seven times, National Staff College, and Hawk Mountain Ranger School.  Phillip was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the National Rifle Association, and the Patriot Guard.

Phillip will be greatly missed by his wife Regena, his parents Phillip and Janice Aye and Albert and Geraline Wamser.  Phillip will be remembered by his devoted brothers Sam Aye and Dave Sprinkle as well as his loving sisters Cindy Rhudy, Debbie Weaver, Vicki Padilla, Sheri Thurston, Linda Elopre, Donna Chevalier, Kristi Davenport, and Jeanie Hedgepath.  Innumerable other friends and family were blessed to know him.

Friends and family are invited to attend a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 16, 2009, at the Burlingame Federated Church in Burlingame, Kansas.  Interment with military funeral honors will follow at the Burlingame Cemetery. He will lie in state from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, at Carey Funeral Home in Burlingame, where the family will meet with relatives and friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions can be made to Kansas Wing, Civil Air Patrol.  Donations will be used to fund cadet scholarships for National Special Activities so that Phillip may continue to touch the lives of young people in a positive way, and sent c/o the Funeral Home, P.O. Box 196, Burlingame, KS 66413.

My understanding is that Phil was known through the 82nd ABN at the time as the Specialist who streamered on Siciliy in 1989 and lived. Not too many guys lose both chutes and survive. He did.

See you there, Nathan.

He was. He's wearing it now.

Family and friends visitation went well tonight, my estimate about 100 or so visitors and family. The cadet honor and color guards have really stepped up, couldn't ask for any better of anyone. Both teams, all dozen or so, are house guests of Col. Aye's tonight with their Senior chaperons.

Phil was an active Patriot Guard rider and the PGR will both escort him from the church and have a flag line at the cemetary awaiting him.

It's 2132, I'm back home for the night.

The services were emotionally draining for everyone involved and a perfect tribute to Phil. The church seats 300 and at least 40 folks were standing in back and the sides. There were members present from as far away as Pennsylvania Wing and representatives from the U.S. Army, Air Force and Navy (Phil's father is retired USN) as well as NHQ, CAP-USAF and the KSARNG. Those present who were attendees of NBB were allowed to wear their berets to the services and many in civilian attire wore their St. Alban's crosses and the NRA marksmanship badges earned under Phil's training and guidance. CAP Talk members rfranz, Nathan, Billford1, dustoff and yours truly were present as well.

The services were officiated by a long time friend of Phil's: a former CAP cadet from the Emporia unit in World War 2 turned US Army Intel officer whom upon retirement entered the clergy. Among the speakers were Col. Kuddes (NCR/CC) who spoke about Phil's selfless service to CAP. Next, Sergeant Major Mark Lahan, a former CAP cadet and is now a CAP Captain, spoke of Phil's service in the U.S. Army. Mark and Phil served in Battalion recon platoons in different Infantry regiments in the 82 ABN at the same time. Lastly, a lifelong friend of Phil's spoke of his memories of Phil and his family. A video montage was also shown of Phil's times in the Army, CAP, his wedding day and friends. It got very emotional for everyone there.

The funeral procession was escorted to the cemetary by members of the Patriot Guard Riders who also formed a flag line and set up U.S. flags along all the side walks at the Church. Osage County Sheriff's officers and officers from the Burlingame Police Department (one of which a former cadet) both provided traffic control. Graveside services were rendered and military honors provided by the 1st Infantry Division's ceremonial platoon out of Fort Riley, Kansas.

Members of the KSWG Honor guard, a joint detail consisting of cadets from KSWG HQ, KS-057 and KS077 did an outstanding job of keeping vigil during the services and posting/retiring the colors as well as serving as Col. Aye's escort through the services. Special thanks go out to KS034 for providing shuttle services for the members who arrived by air, ferrying them from the Osage City airport to Burlingame and back, a 20 mile round trip. Members of KS123 also assisted by keeping radio watch for anyone needing talk-in to the services. You guys know who you are and have my personal thanks.

It was a good service. If anyone didn't recognize me, I think I was the only SM not in a service coat, due to me not having ordered the silver nameplate after turning senior.

It really pleased me to see the turnout of so many who showed up for such a moving goodbye to our friend and Leader who has gone to be with God. Thanks to the motorcycle Patriot Honor Guard, to the Military Honor Guard and all who were there. Phil's Legacy will live with us as we serve. Before yesterday I never knew what an impact Phil had on so many. I will always recall this time for this unique leader and his life that has touched so many.

I am VERY glad that Fred Phelp's group was otherwise occupied. Being so close to their HQ made me a little bit nervous, especially since Lt Col Aye apparently was a Patriot Guard rider.

Luckily for us, they are apparently busy protesting a high school putting on a theatrical run of "Rent."

The Phelpses normally don't do veteran's funerals. They like the funerals of the war dead because they can maximize their painful effects on more people and possibly score face time on a news broadcast. In short, Phil's funeral didn't qualify (Thank God!!!)

The PGR rides for all veterans' funerals when requested whether or not the Cult is going to be present.

Please keep the members of his squadron, NCR-KS-077, in your thoughts and prayers as well. Many of the junior officers are former cadets and have been hit pretty hard by his loss.

I just found out today that one of the members of the Ft. Riley detail is a former CAP cadet who is now a serving US Army PFC. Karma...

Amen."
