Dad2-4

We have LARGE cadet and hare having trouble finding uniforms to fit. I've been rereading the newest version of 39-1, and it seems that only cadets over 18 can wear corporate options. Is this correct?

TheSkyHornet

Correct; only if over the age of 18 can they wear corporate uniforms.

The cadet should be working to try to "downsize." Until then, they are allowed to wear any cadet uniform. If they are unable to wear a cadet uniform because they simply don't fit, they'll need to consider wearing civilian attire until they can find a uniform in their size or they slim to fit into a cadet uniform.

Note that cadets who are over the age of 18 and are wearing corporate uniforms should not be doing so as a favored/preferred alternative uniform. As part of the Cadet Program, they should be striving to maintain an active, healthy lifestyle.

Read this aloud to yourself. See if you can identify the failure of blanket statements.

Unlike, say, your average NCAA D1 lineman; none of whom are likely to be anywhere near height/weight for CAP?

The problem is "weight' does not equal "healthy". That goes for Military personnel as well as CAP Cadets.

A professional Body Builder is not going to meet any Service's height/weight standards. A person suffering from anorexia will like have no issues passing a height/weight standard, but will they have the upper body strength to due 25 push ups?

Healthy is the goal, weight is an arbitrary standard which science every day is showing really has no objective meaning.

For our purposes, shouldn't cadet health be defined by the HFZ, the Healthy Fitness Zone of the Fitnessgram assessment we use?  Realistically, is a cadet that doesn't meet height/weight in that situation because they're just too buff?  Nah (in 99.99999% of situations).

Note that the HFZ does not have a component measuring weight, BMI, etc.  I think this is wise for the population the Fitnessgram is built for, where weight/body image issues can have exceptionally negative impact.

With this said, I recommend completely removing our obsession with height/weight, especially for cadets.

If they're good enough to wear the uniform at that weight until their 18th birthday, what makes them unworthy the day after?

The Air Force doesn't use height/weight anymore, they're moving away from the waist measurement (not worth points anymore).  Knowing CAP, keeping this silliness around is probably self-inflicted.
