Im confused and like most people dont know what reg to look in to find my answer.  When a cadet transfers to the senior program, what grade do they start at?  Are they warrant officers or 2nd Lt's?  Does it matter if you got your mitchell?  Im confused and need a bit of guidance.

Without pulling the regs out...   Flight officer ranks are for those not yet 21.  A new member or a cadet who has not earned the Mitchell starts out as a SM and must complete level 1, be in for 6 months, and be 21 or older to be eligible for 2d Lt.  A cadet who has earned the Mitchell is immediately eligible for 2d Lt upon their 21st birthday.

Which brings up the question. A cadet without a Mitchell, but 3 years in the program transfers to senior membership at age 21. Since he/she has completed CPPT after age 18, and former cadets are exempt from level 1, (Reg doesn't say mitchell required, only "former cadet") why can't he/she be promoted to 2LT immediately? Where does it say that there is a 6 month period prior to promotion if there has been two years as a cadet? I don't see where the regulation requires 6 months as a senior member.

Because the officer grades were only intended for officers 21 and older. That's why CAP incorporated the Flight Officer ranks for cadets who want to go officer at 18.

Look at Figure 2 in CAPR 35-5, Section B, Paragraph 11 (b), where it says "6 months as a senior member". Since the hypothetical cadet didn't reach the Mitchell, being a former cadet does not apply.

Actually, it does say that the former cadet must have had Mitchell or higher in order to have the Orientation Course waived. Cite: CAPR 35-5, Section A, Paragraph 6 (c).

FORMER FO here.

If you are going to switch before 21 (which I advices against) do it sooner rather than later.  Here's why.

If you are between 18 and 21 you will be a flight officer.  Mitchell gets you FO which at 21 is equivelant to 2Lt.

The advantage here is that the Time in grade is shorter for FO's.

3 Months SM-FO
6 Months FO-TFO
12 Months TFO-SFO

This compares to 6 Months SM-LT
12 Months 2Lt- 1LT
18 Months 1Lt-Capt.

You will save yourself 9 Months if you get all the other requirements done as well
