MERRIMACK -- The local fire department is mourning the loss of one of its on-call volunteers firefighters who died in a motorcycle crash Sunday.

Paul Mondoux, 63, was driving his motorcycle along I-293 in Manchester about 4:30 p.m. Sunday when he left the roadway just after the split, according to police.

"The motorcycle continued along the shoulder of the roadway and struck a metal guardrail," said New Hampshire State Police.

Mondoux was pronounced dead at the scene.

During his career as an on-call EMS volunteer, Mondoux responded to numerous motor vehicle accidents.

"He spent a lot of time volunteering for us and in the community. You don't see that much anymore," said Assistant Fire Chief Richard Pierson of Merrimack Fire Rescue.

Mondoux worked behind the scenes to make sure that every response call had enough firefighters and emergency medical technicians on hand.

He served as president of the Merrimack Call Firefighters Association, and was lieutenant of Merrimack Fire Rescue's EMS volunteers division.

Pierson said the volunteer division is not very active, but said Mondoux kept the unit alive by working two nights a week and one weekend a month by responding to ambulance calls, driving ambulances to the hospital or assisting patients in need.

"He did love his motorcycles," Pierson said of Mondoux.

Police said in a statement that the circumstances surrounding Mondoux's motorcycle accident are still under investigation, although speed is believed to be a factor. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, which occurred along the shoulder of the highway.

Several northbound lanes of I-293 were closed for about three hours on Sunday while authorities investigated.

Some of those who knew Mondoux posted condolences on social media Monday.

"Heartbreaking for all who knew Paul. He was an incredibly kind person," wrote James Dauphinais.

According to Pierson, Mondoux was studying to become an advanced EMT. Previously, the Merrimack resident was active with the American Red Cross and was a CPR instructor.

Prior to retirement, Mondoux was a computer analyst at Lockheed Martin. He applied those software skills volunteering with the town's technology committee, on which he had been serving as chairman.

Mondoux also was chairman of the Greater Nashua Medical Reserve Corp.
