Title: Admirals Check-In
Post by: ColonelJack on April 25, 2007, 06:52:59 PM
Since I apparently started all this, I'd like to call for a check-in of all Admirals of the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska here.  I'm calling the muster.

Admiral Bagley ... HERE!

Several years ago, I was made an admiral in the TX Navy by Anne Richards.

But I don't wanna go to war over it, or anything.. I'm all about peaceful coexistence.   ;D

Just to throw a note of seriousness here, back in the late 1800s and up until WWII about half the states had a naval militia, including quite a few inland states.  They were the equivalent of the National Guard and actually were the only reserve system the Navy had for a long time.  After the Naval Reserve was formed the naval militias seriously declined and now only a few states have them (New York, Ohio, Alaska, and Texas).  These are the equivalent of State Defense Forces and many states still have statutes authorizing them still on the books.

I strongly suspect that Nebraska's Admiral program is the remnants of their naval militia system.  While they may have turned it into a joke, it still is a serious matter in some parts.  Just wanted to bring it to your attention.

I strongly suspect that Nebraska's Admiral program is the remnants of their naval militia system.  While they may have turned it into a joke, it still is a serious matter in some parts.  Just wanted to bring it to your attention.

That sounds better than the real story. Excerpts from a 2003 newspaper article:

"The navy started when Gov. Charles Bryan left the state for a few weeks in 1931 and put Lt. Gov. Theodore W. Metcalfe in charge. Metcalfe's friends had been goading him to appoint them to government positions, so he created the fictional navy and began appointing admirals.

"My answer to them was that I could do them one better and appoint them with the highest rank I could think of," Metcalfe said in a 1946 letter.

The practice was continued by Gov. Dwight Griswold in the 1940s, and the tradition was passed on to subsequent governors.

[Former] Gov. Mike Johanns has granted 6,609 admiralties in Nebraska's Great Navy since taking office in January 1999 [through 2003]. His first official act upon taking office was to grant admiralties to his wife, Stephanie, his then-20-year-old son, Justin, and his then-16-year- old daughter, Michaela.

But not every person who applies will receive an admiralship. Johanns has rejected a handful.

"The one that I specifically remember was very strange," said Cherri Carpenter, the governor's administrative assistant who handles the applications. "It was very militant and gave no reason why he should have an admiralship."
(Future CAP Talk applicants take note).

"In Kentucky, it's a big deal to be a Kentucky colonel," [Admiral Gloria LeDroit] said of that state's goodwill ambassadors. "We're admirals, so we're a little smoother."

Them sound like fightin' words.

Duely noted, and corrected.  I do believe that according to the pamphlet recieved, that something like this would be punishable by walking the plank.  First I'll have to complete objective 10 - "Increase the fleet of flagships of the Nebraska Navy" before I have a plank to walk however.

Sure, I'll take 2% of the profits for being in command.

Of course, I've just realized that, in a set of dress whites, I'd bear a striking resemblance to the Pillsbury Doughboy.

Maybe chokers aren't the best idea for me ...

Admiral "NAYBOR" of the Nebraska Navy, reporting for duty!

Anyone know if there really is a uniform for this commission?  Maybe patterned after the State naval militias (bright red name tag, state seal on the lower left pocket of all uniforms, regular US Navy sholder boards, seal of the State of Nebraska over/in place of the the US shield on the combo cap officers emblem)?

How does one go about getting a commission as an admiral in the Texas Navy?  I hear you can seek those too.

What other state commissions are out there, besides SDF or NG?

You may owe me a laptop, Lt. Colgan ... if mine still works after I clean out the coffee I just spewed into it, though, you won't.  How'd you know what I'd look like?   :D ;D

Ouch...a laptop...a keyboard might be easier.  I killed a laptop with soda once.  It was fun.

I'm just hacking NHQ's computers and looking at all the spy pictures they have...

I'll try.  There's a folder called "Evil Plans," but I couldn't get into it.

Admiral (NE) LT here, if you haven't found it, here it is:  http://www.texasnavy.com/index.html

QuoteMembership in the Texas Navy Association is restricted to Admirals in the Texas Navy.  Commissions are granted only by the Governor of Texas.  The recommended procedure to obtain a Commission is to contact your state legislator and request that he or she submit a request to the Governor on your behalf.  Additionally, an Admiral of the Texas Navy may make a request on your behalf, through the Texas Navy Association.  The Texas Navy Association offers no recommended method for the general public to petition the Governor directly.  For more information, you should contact the Communications Officer of the Texas Navy Association.

I should have my commission (TX) soon...
probably could put in a good word for ya!
