Here's an interesting article that argues all is not well in volunteer pilot (VP) ops.

http://www.avweb.com/news/features/Volunteer-Pilot-Flight-or-Illegal-Part-135-228750-1.html

From a quick read, it looks like the uninsured among us might want to get insurance, and assurance that coverage extends to CAP flight activities... if Rick Durden's interpretation of the FARs is correct.  I guess I need a little education, how do the activities of the various volunteer pilot organizations differ in substantive ways from CAP ops with regard to the points Durden discusses?

As I understand it, the key difference is that CAP has the necessary exemption that other VPOs/VPs don't. This is one of the reasons we have to deal with seemingly onerous CAP regulations.

+1 - The CAP exemptions were based on organizational / situational specific petitions, not a general blanket
that "may or may not" apply.

In the former, when the rules are followed you can be sure te exemption will apply, vs. the latter which is more like
doing your taxes and it's a "best guess" as to whether something is applicable.

Here is more detail on the specifics of the exemptions:

And you can view the petitions here:

Didn't that change recently for CAP? About a year ago two CAP pilots died in the accident in a CAP plane while returning to home base after an Angel Flight Mission. Self funded I believe. After that accident was when the IFR minimums were raised  to 500 feet (even if the approach chart says 200). And I thought we were told not to do these type flights anymore. Someone can correct me if I am wrong.

Correction, CAP Personnel were in their own aircraft, "off duty" from CAP World. No uniforms, but they were aircrew from CAP, they were flying together in POV/POA.

They most certainly were in a CAP owned aircraft. Check the NTSB accident report.
