Title: What I do outside of CAP (Where my CAP dollars come from...)
Post by: Fifinella on November 26, 2008, 12:29:26 AM
As suggested, a place to learn more about CAPTalkers and their "outside activities".

For Flying Pig:  I am getting a Master's in International Studies, with a concentration in Security Studies.

Roughly, this means examining why nations feel secure or insecure, and considering issues such as WMD, coercive diplomacy/deterrence/arms control, terrorism/counterterrorism, insurgency/counter-insurgency, NATO after the Cold War, UN Peacekeeping, RMA, Theory of War (Jomini, Clausewitz, Sun Tzu, Liddell Hart, etc.), and, much to my dismay, theories of International Relations, which are philosophically-based arguments about why nations act the way they do.

Overall, a pretty cool way to spend a year.

What about the rest of you?  Anyone wanna' share?  ;)

I was mostly retired, but decided to do taxes for H&R Block again, so I start back at that the 2nd week of Dec. The rest of the year, I let the gummint pay me to "sit around drink beer, eat chocolates and watch soap operas." Oh, and read CS.

I am an IT security engineer for a company that makes encryption products.   Basically, I run around the country educating customers on the various products and how they can secure their data with them, help them install the products, and consult on a technical level.  I also speak occasionally at different security organizations on data security topics.    I work from a home office when not on the road (which is greatly appreciated when the UDF mission runs until 7am...).

I am a Firefighter/EMT-Basic (Fire Instructor, Arson Investigator, HazMat Technician, ARFF... etc) here in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains (Daniel Boone National Forest). It doesn't pay much, so to pay the bills I travel the World as a Department of Defense contractor doing the same thing I do here at home only for a ton more money. So far my contracts have taken me to England, France, United Arab Emirates, Iraq, and soon Antarctica (just can't decide if I can handle the cold!) Because of this, I have seen more of the world than anyone I know here in North Eastern Kentucky... And all before the age of 24!

In my spare time I enjoy Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain...  :D

I am a State Probation/Parole Officer...   I worked the road as a police officer for 13 years and finally gave up  nights in search of a more normal home life and flexible schedule.  It also gave me the ability to do some new things like giving CAP a try and going back to college after a long hiatus.  I am studying art with a concentration in photography.  Its a good break from the Type A surroundings I have become rather comfortable with.     ...but the question asked "Where my CAP dollars come from..."  I guess the answer to that is "My Wife".   Since changing jobs I got zapped back to the bottom of a pay scale and slowly trying to claw my way back up.  She rules the checkbook in our house.

As for myself I have the following experience, 4 years shipping & receiving, 15 years owning a small cleaning business, about 10 years doing airline ramp and airline catering. I was injured on the job by having my right foot crushed in a catering truck pinch point. Missed the step, when truck box was not down all the way. I had 2 1/2 toes removed. The cold winters of MN just got to be to much. Cold weather causes lots of pain.

I meet my wife of 22 years through CAP. Total time in CAP 6 years with 2 different memberships.  I have 5 kids, 3 boys, 2 girls. Oldest 22 youngest 10. I worked for the Mouse when we arrived in FL. I took time off to spend with the family, 6 mos now. Yes I am climbing the walls. Hope to return to work in next several weeks.

:)

I boil water for a living.....

I work at a coal fired power plant as an Auxilliary Operator, working toward Control Room qualification.  I also assist in the maintenance and run the water chemistry program.  It's 12 hour shifts, nights and days, but the pay is pretty good.  I'm also working on my Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Human Resources Management.  I am hoping to transfer to a law school but will most likely end up going to California Maritime Academy.  I've been in this field for about 5 years now.  Before that, I was an upper level manager in a private security company and before that I was in the Army for a while.

Someone on here sounds like Azakhet/Solace from a MUD I used to play.....  (sniff, sniff)

I currently work in the IT department of a primary care organization, supporting 75 physician offices.  After 20 years in public safety, I had enough of the crazy hours and went into the private sector. The pay is a whole lot better, and there are no weekend and holiday shifts except for the occasional upgrade or outage.

Public safety is still in my blood, so I'm a volunteer firefighter/EMT in my home town. I go back to my old department on a per diem basis to answer 911 calls. It keeps my skills up and my mind sharp and I get to hang out with the old gang for a few hours a month.

Me? I'm a journalist. Right now, I edit a little paper in St. Petersburg, Fla., but before that, was a visual editor at The Detroit News, Sarasota (Fla.) Herald-Tribune, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and smaller papers in Ohio, West Virginia and California before that.

The redesign we did in Pittsburgh won international acclaim in 2003, and I've redesigned two other newspapers, the latest being the one I'm working right now. I know Photoshop and Illustrator like second nature, as well as the business end of a Nikon and the phone, keyboard and reporter's notebook. Yip, a jack of all trades.

And I covered this year's baseball playoffs and World Series. (There was at least one other CAP member in the stands at Game 2 in St. Petersburg, but he works for the Phillies here in Clearwater and he's my communications guy.)

Toledo, Ohio police officer...  Retired.

Major, Military Police, US Army Reserve...  Retired.

Presently my CAP habit is paid for by my business, the "School of Armed Security."  I provide high-quality firearms training to armed security officers, and equally high-quality training to unarmed security officers through a contract with another security school.  I also make a few extra dollars by training armed citizens in what they need to obtain a Florida concealed weapon license.

So after several years as a hard-working Republican, I find myself with no job and no plans to get a job, dependent on checks from the government on the first of the month to pay my bills, and using a gun to get more money when I need it.

In other words, I have morphed into a Democrat!  Somebody pop me a cold 40-ounce Old English!

6 years as medic/pharmacy specialist in Army Reserve
2 years as police officer
waiter
retail sales
pizza delivery
15 years as EMT and Paramedic
3 years as volunteer EMT/Firefighter
now, working for US Postal Service as carrier for last 11 years.

Had better hours as paramedic, but the pay sucked. Now if someone ticks me off, all I can do is pepper spray them or lose their mail.  At least when I was paramedic, I could stick them with a BIG needle.  ;D

I've been a Physician Assistant for 30 yrs and am now semi-retired.  I spent 20+ yrs with a large health services agency in SoCal, 18 yrs in a clinical role then moved into disaster planning.  Prior to my retirement I ran a MMRS program, http://www.fema.gov/mmrs/ ,for several yrs.

I now work part time as an instructor in a WMD/EMS program that is part of the  DHS/Natl. Domestic Preparedness Consortium.

Currently, my main job is working in the Logistics division of the nations largest privately owned construction company (3rd largest in overall domestic construction).  It's never dull, one day I'm working finances, the next I'm managing special projects and testing new IT software, the next I'm dispatching trucks, the next I'm working in purchasing.  Been there for almost 2 years.

On the side, I do BBQ catering during the summer season.  Been doing this for about 10 years now.

Previously I've also managed a higher-end beer & wine store for 3 years (back when CecilDP and I were in the same squadron), and have been a Starbucks Barista twice.

I manage the "service" operations for a small company delivering toys.  Billiards tables, shuffleboard, darts, card tables, Spa's/hottubs, bars, etc.

I setup the service schedule's for 3 crews and occasionally run a crew of my own.

Of course I do all of this part-time.  I too am a full time CAP'er, and from time to time I allow my boss to tell me where to be.

I am an engineer with Lockheed.. Electronic Defense Systems, Electronic Warfare.. As a matter of fact I support the APR-48 that is found on the Longbow.. That's the thing below the spare tire!  (FCR)  The APR-48 is known as a Radar Frequency interferometer, it works with the Fire Control Radar.  I am supposed to go to Kuwait to teach Apache pilots on it's functions.  Was supposed to go last year, but the Army is slow in approval I guess...

Well, once upon a time, my CAP dollars came from my job as an Administrative Assistant/Test Proctor for a company that provided the mental health services in a privately run state prison for women.  Philosophical differences brought about an end to that, sadly.

Unfortunately, that means that I've had to step down as Squadron CC as to find suitable employment, I have to move to the "big city."

They have big cities in New Mexico?  :D  Just messin, I can actually relate.  I would much rather be living East of the Chesapeake Bay here in MD, but the Washington, DC and Baltimore areas tend to offer a lot more job opportunities.

I'm another of those work-from-home types, which explains my high posting numbers here...

Most people who know me would say I am a full-time CAP member with a part-time job.

It struck me the other day as I was totaling up my year - I owe almost the entirety of my income this year to
contacts made directly from CAP (and likely next year as well).

Two of my biggest, coolest jobs and one interim job in my life came from CAP contacts.  Actually, other than my current job, everything in my professional life can be attributed to CAP.

Former USAF SSgt who originally worked in aircraft maintenance (crew chief on C-17s), but retrained into intelligence (ELINT Analyst). Currently working a part-time security job for Northrop Grumman--just to keep my clearance active--while attending school full-time to pursue a B.A. in Intelligence Studies with a minor in Philosophy at American Military University. Between my part-time job, VA disability and the MGIB, my living and (most of my) CAP expenses are covered. But, once I'm done with my B.A. I'll go back to work full-time as an Intelligence Analyst or Signals Analyst (the former is preferred since I've already done the latter) for either one of the intelligence agencies or a defense contractor. Pending that, I'll finally have more $$$ to do the things I'd like to do, but cannot right now, to include attending more CAP functions like NGSAR and eventually getting a private pilot's license.
