I just got placed on 4 more days of "staying at home doing nothing" by my doctor followed by an MRI and bone density test, followed by "light limited duty" until we get my back fixed.  He also prescribed me some better drugs.  So if you experience my post count going up or slurred typing with irrational claims of inventing things like the question mark, please ignore me.

This is only a ***WARNING***.

I have drill this weekend where I'm sure I'll be sitting there at a computer since I can't do much of anything... Grrrr....  I AM NOT GETTING OLD!!!!!!

I was 33 when I joined CAP.  I started running and working out and lost 40 pounds in like four months.  Now I'm 42.  I still run 2 - 3 miles every other day but on a tread mill, otherwise my knees swell up and give me trouble.  Now it would take me about a year to lose 40 pounds.  I can still keep up with the cadets on a cross country hump, and even out walk most of them  I can keep pace with my best ones on push-ups and sit-ups.  However, the recovery time is longer.  The ground is also a lot harder now then is was 9 years ago:)  The last training camp I went to back in April, I had a cadet show up without the required documentation.  Being the nice Officer that I am, and after throughly chastising them for failure to report with the required paperwork, I went home and printed it out so they could participate.  It just happened to give me an excuse to sleep in a bed.  I guess that officially made me a Senior Member:)

It's comin for you buddy and there's no stopping it.

Hey, I'm healthy and in shape.  I pass my police departments physical agility test with flying colors, the AF PT test no problem and I work out at least 4 days a week, mostly cardio.  Obviously no PT in the past 2 weeks and I'm feeling it.  I'm no superman and don't care to show off my love handles, but I can definately hold my own.  In fact, after moving down to Florida from DC just over a year ago, I've lost 10 or so pounds.

I will win!

I wish I had some high speed story like I did a swan dive out of our squadron's C-172 or kicked a door in at work and got my butt handed to me by a dude on meth.  Truth is, I haven't got a clue.

X-rays revealed a compression fracture in L1, something that probably happened in a car accident or jumping years ago.  Apparently they can remain "dormant" for years then one small move can aggravate them causing sever pain and spasms.  The pain is seriously intense, like I verbally express how I feel a few times a day.  Today, doc almost had me in tears as he poked and prodded.  Thought he was having fun...

Anyhoo, it sucks and I want to be at work, surfing, picking up my son or simply mowing the lawn.  I'm sure I'm on my wife's last nerve.  I know I'm on mine.

Kirt,

I know exactly how you feel.  About 10 years ago, I had L-2 slip.  Not sure how, it just "happened."  The only reason I noticed was because my legs would tingle after a few minutes of standing up.

Anyway, once diagnosed, I underwent a spinal fusion that fused L-1 to L-2 and L-2 to L-3 using some bone chips, a few steel rods, some screws and wire.  I was about an inch taller after that surgery.

It took about 6 months to completely recover from the surgery, I had to wear a brace and couldn't lift anything more than 5 pounds for a while.

I do still have some complications with it, like if I over exert myself, I get really bad sciatica and can't walk, but as long as I take an aleve first, I'm good to go.  My doctore recommended I use some COX-3 inhibitor to stop myself from getting ulcers from the amount of aleve I was using, but I have become more "aware" of triggers and try to avoid them as best as possible.

Get well buddy - and follow all your doctor's directions, no matter how good you feel, it could mean the difference between weeks off your feet again.

Best of Luck.

I've got a few friends going to school down that way, one at JU. I'll hafta buy you a beer next time I'm down there.

Here's a story that, although I know you're in massive amounts of pain, might make you feel a bit better.

We had a dude roll into the trauma center about 6 months ago via helicopter, single person motorcycle wreck. Luckily, was wearing a helmet, but the [darn]est thing happened. His skull and C1 were about an inch apart, detatched, but the spinal cord was still intact! I wish i had a picture of the lateral x-ray, it's the freakiest thing you ever saw.

Followed up eventually, he actually survived the surgery, no paralysis, but is a bit taller and doesn't have much range of motion with his head. I believe he's still in a halo, too.

Hope you feel better, enjoy the *legal* narcotics!

Stonewall: I can sympathize with you.  I had back surgery at age 32 to repair the disc at L-5.  Perfect recovery: never have looked back.  Have to watch what I try to lift, but that should be true for everyone.  Three and a half years ago, had a total knee replacement due to arthritis: partly caused by running.  Had an MRI yesterday and the other knee has to go.  I will be getting closer to being the bionic man.  Of course, I am several decades older than you.

I turned 40 last year, looking down the barrel of 41 in 3 more weeks. Ugh.

I go out and fling my pink body out of planes and then arrest my fall with some nylon & string.  Sometimes that "arresting" is fairly gentle.  Other times, its awfully violent.

2 jumps ago it was EXTREMELY violent and that canopy is going to go where old canopies go to be made into parachute pants or car covers.  I'm glad I didn't injure myself just on opening, but I could have.  That would be bad.

But I've realized that in the last few years, I'm not as resilient as I once was.  Bummer...

Hey Kirt, I can feel some of your pain. I fell at work and and now a proud owner of a level 2 tear to my left knee, right side. I have done 2 rounds of x-rays and a MRI. Talked to the Ortho Doc last week and I get a knee brace Thursday. I have to wear this for the next 2 or 3 months.

I have pain pills but try not to take them. They gave me anti-inflammatory pills for the first 2 weeks then the Dr took me off them. Every time I move I feel like my wife just kicked me in the knee.

Next month I will be up in your neck of the woods with my 13 yr old son and his Sea Cadets class on a tour of the Navy Base.

Hope you feel better soon. Thank God for the internet.

I feel all of your pains too. Back in 2000, I flipped a four-wheeler and really messed by back up. Every so often, it goes out for anywhere between 5 minutes to a week. I just recently had it go out on me, then spasm everytime I tried to get up. Nothing else worked, so Cleveland EMS took me to the hospital for a nice shot of demoral, and some viccodin. Hopefully, my wife will get this job that she's up for, and we'll get some benefits. When that happens, it off to the doctor I go to see what exactly is wrong, and what I can do, or have done to fix it.

Colonel, before "sealing the deal" with surgery, if you have not already done so, please check out conservative spinal treatments such as mechanical traction (or, as it is sometimes referred to, "spinal decompression" - however, that term can sometimes be confusing as there is a  surgical procedure known as decompression).  Perhaps there's a physician's (D.O. or M.D.) practice near you that offers these types of treatments.

So sorry to learn of your back difficulties.  It is no fun.  I'm nearly 47, so consider you a very young man still!  Wish you all the best.

Anyway, I wish I could tell you that reaching middle aged was a barrel of laughs and easy, however...it's not.  The body doesn't respond like it use to.  It takes longer, harder work to just stay in the shape you're in!  I'm probably not helping you feel anybetter, but letting you know rather, you have a lot of support from your "elders."

I've actually done pretty well so far, as far as "getting old".  I'm only 35, and while I've got a set of handles, it's not like they're huge.  I'm 6' 2" and weigh in between 205 and 210 depending on the time of year.  I porked up to 213 in the past 2 months with my back as I stopped working out but failed to lower my food intake.  I just didn't expect to be out of commission this long.  No problem, I'm cutting out about 1/3 of my food intake.

I'm planning to go to Raven school in 2008 so I have no choice but to get back into shape as soon as possible following surgery.  Need to be running 40 minute 5 miles again and maxing my push-ups and sit-ups.  If all goes well, I'll be there by spring.

I have a healed compression fracture in my neck. Over the years C4, 5, and 6 have fused and C1, 2, and 3 are compensating. My x-rays show wide spaces between the skull and the top three vertebrae - up to 1/2 inch.

Fortunately, since the fusion, I have significantly less neck pain, but I am more prone to positional nerve symptoms. (If I sleep in the wrong position my arms are numb and tingly when I wake. Other positions or activities can cause temporary loss of leg and/or arm movement/feeling.

I'm getting used to it and have removed myself from active ES until I know I'm stable enough to handle the requirements (like camping) associated with SAR missions.

I'm still able to train, and am trying to maintain my ratings on mission skills. I'm hoping to be back on the call-out list sometime next year.

I know how you feel.  Back pain is no fun at all.  I had back surgery just about two years ago, to correct an injury sustained 13 years before that (don't you love managed health care?).  Removed discs at L4-5 and L5-S1, fused L4/L5/S1 and filled in the gap with "cadaver bone" (I'm now known as "Frankenspine!") plus six big honkin' screws and two rods to hold it all together.

Still hurts like hell, although not nearly as bad as what it was like before the surgery.   And thanks to Dr. T.K. Ganocy and the gang at Kaiser Permanente (Sunset & Vermont in Los Angeles), I walked out of the hospital under my own steam six days after the surgery!!!

(Side story: the hardware is titanium -- gave me pause for concern the first time I flew commercial after the surgery.  I was sure I would have to go thru a strip-search when the metal detectors went berserk.  I walked through, no beep.  I made the mistake of looking surprised.  The TSA guy asked what was wrong.  I said, "Wow, it didn't go beep!"  He asked me why I wanted it to?!  I told him about the surgery, showed him the scars (front and back) when he asked, and he said, no sweat, titanium is non-ferrous, doesn't trip the magnetometer. ::) )

I'm still taking pain pills, and I've lost a little flexibility (obviously), but life's a lot better now.

Hope all has worked out well for you!

The only NSAID they gave me in my situation was Relafen, which has the added advantage of not being a problem with stomach irritation.  Nice for the mild pain, not really helpful for the big spasms.

Where the heck is Wildomar?

Wildomar, CA is between Lake Elsinore and Temecula on Interstate 15.  My home is off of Bundy Canyon Road, about midway between I-15 and I-215.  We're an unincorporated* portion of southern Riverside County.

//Steve//

[*but that's in the process of changing.  Wildomar is working toward incorporation as a city, should be on the next ballot.]

The reason it hurts so much is that it was probably about 3 inches deep and bigger at the bottom than on the outside.  One of the biggest causes of failed back surgery is smoking, but I am sure that your doctor already warned you about that.  You might try alternating hot and cold packs to increase healing and remove some of the inflammation.  Also, don't try to overdo it until you get clearance from the doctor.  One of my patients came in on Monday in terrible shape.  I had worked on him on the prior Friday and he had been doing much better.  I asked him what he did and he said nothing..  His wife told me that he had been feeling so much better on Saturday that he had gone out and cut firewood.. and then strangely couldn't get out of bed on Sunday..Take it easy and listen to the doctor.. After all, you paid him so listen to him..

Called doc and he said I could take 2 percocets if one wasn't working.  Now I feel pretty good.  Thank goodness for On Demand cable TV, DVR, CAPTalk, a hot wife, a dog who fetches nothing, and a certain former Spaatz cadet who is sending me fudge...  I promise to lay off the random postings and stuff...but I am bored out of my mind.

Anyone notice a sudden decrease in posts from yours truly?

Went back to work on Thursday with my 5 on 4 off night schedule (2100 to 0700).  Day 1 was training with CQB in a "ship in the box", a 4 story "island" of an aircraft carrier.  Pretty cool stuff.  Worked with Jacksonville Sheriff's Office SWAT.  Friday night brought me back in with a bang.  Drove up on a domestic in progress.  Just me and a drunk couple whaling on each other.  No back problems resulted but I did put my new Oakley gloves to the test.  Held up like a champ.

Been at the gym almost 4 weeks now but have stuck to the elliptical until today.  Ran 1 1/2 miles (AF PT standard) on the treadmill in 13 minutes.  Not bad if you ask me.  Goal is 10 minutes.

Gained 10 lbs since mid-August and already lost 3.  Can I get a little hooah?  HOOAH!

Maybe the AF standard mile run, but you didn't pass the cadet PT test times for mile run.  But then again, most seniors can't meet the cadet PT tests.

I said 1 1/2 miles, not 1 mile.  This, after I had back surgery less than 2 months ago.  But yes, I need work.  And no, most seniors couldn't pass a cadet PT test, but could most cadets pass a "real" military PT test in turn?  Either way, I'm back baby....

My fastest 2 mile run in the Army, 11:50 something, came after training solely on the treadmill.  The reason why I think the treadmill makes my run times faster is becaues on the treadmill you maintain your speed.  Set it at 7:00 minute miles and you will continue that pace until you physically push the button to slow down.  On the street, when you tire, you automatically slow down.  Just some food for thought.  I train 100% on the treadmill for all runs, military and civilian and I always max the military PT runs and do well on 5Ks and such.

Still, there are downfalls to only training on a treadmill.  But as long as you're aware of them, it doesn't make much difference.  Unfortunately, most people don't heed the differences...

Ha!  Yeah, my favorite time of year at the gym.  It only lasts between 2 and 4 weeks before the gym starts making money from people who no long go.  My buddy has been paying the monthly fee of $59 for he and his wife and haven't been in 9 months.

I've belonged to a gym for 9 years now and enjoy watching these folks everytime, except for when they hog the equipment.

On Monday @0600 I was the sole person in the gym!

As in the lights shut off suddenly after a half hour on the treadmill since there was insufficient motion in the room to activate the light switch/motion detector thing.

Treadmill in the dark is fairly interesting for a few moments.   :o

And yes, I can be an equipment hog for long runs on the treadmill. (10+ miles)

But at least there are enough so no one has to wait for me.
