Does anyone know of a repository of CAP photos that fall under Creative Commons licensing?  I am working on a project and looking for high quality CAP images.  I could always go out and find the situations I want photos of and take the pictures myself, but I would prefer to finish this project this year!  I am looking for mostly ES related photos.  Air, Ground, and Base images.  I checked the CC section of Flickr but there were only about 30 or so CAP photos there.  Anyone have a secret stash they go to for CAP images?

Visit history.cap.gov and send in a request if you could.

There are several albums of ES photos from NESA online at https://www.flickr.com/photos/capnesa/collections/

I'd see if there's anything you want to use, and then use the "contact us" page at http://wess.alwg.us/nesa/contact.htm for permission once you know which photos you'd like.

Depending on your project, you may not even need a creative commons license.

I will send a request to the  CAP Historian, thank you for that suggestion.  I didn't even think of it.

Lt. Col. Bos, thank you.  I have been looking through the NESA albums and there are several photos there that will work.

I'm not even sure that I do need one.  I admit that I have only a basic knowledge of copyright law.  But I also know I would not want to use someone else's work without permission.  And while there are a lot of great CAP related photos to be found via internet searches, I am looking for very specific shots.

Here is a related question.  If a photo is listed as being in the public domain, can I use it in my CAP presentations (with intent to to host it on the interwebs) and am I required to show the specific source or only state that photos used are in the public domain?

Example:  https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Civil_Air_Patrol_Gippsland_GA8_on_runway.jpg

Thank you all for the assistance.

Anything released by the Air Force as Public Domain can be used in any non-commercial application (i.e. your finished product can't generate revenue). You can simply state the photo is public domain, but since the photographer is listed, Master Sgt. Lance Cheung, I would go ahead and list his name.

If a photographer has listed a work as creative commons, you may use if for editorial purposes with a nod to the author. Presentations should be fine, but if you're publishing on the web make an attempt to get ahold of the photog and ask. When in doubt, ask.

It's also helpful to double check the metadata of the file. Most photo programs will read metadata, and most photogs that are picky about copyright will embed the copyright in the photo, and will usually have contact info listed as well. If a photo is listed as public domain or creative commons, but the file itself has an embedded copyright, it's copyrighted. Again, make every attempt to track down the photographer and ask permission.
