Title: Sport Pilot to Private
Post by: Tubacap on June 18, 2007, 01:37:54 AM
I have a potential member that is looking to move his certificate from sport pilot to a private pilot certificate.  Does anyone have any experience with this?  Not being a pilot I am definitely at a loss.

Pretty straight forward actually.  Other than getting a 3rd Class medical, He made need to get some additional training in nights, cross country and instruments if his only training was for the Sport Pilot License.  His hours (and XC experience) in LSA's count.  He has to get sign offs from his CFI, take the Private written and practical exams.  The AOPA has some pretty good resources he can use if he is a member.  Sportys Pilot Shop has some real good written test practice sites available as well.

You can always fly "down" from your licenses.

i.e ATP's (airline pilots) can fly private owned aircraft, ect....)

Private pilots can fly ultralights

This is actually the path I plan to take once I kick (at least some of) the kids out. Get my SP at about half the cost per hour of Pvt and half the time, fly a little and build proficiency, then go back and finish the remainder of my training for Pvt.
