We did a cohort in August-ish. Our cadets pushed it through despite some reticence (which, when I fully explained the program, went away) about turning cadets away during or in between cohorts.

Before: 9 cadets (these are all that are left from before, and still a good active number)
Six of those are 3+ year cadets

After: 19 cadets- literally triple what we've recruited in 3 years, done in 3 months.
15+ attendance that I've seen so far.
Cadet staff has been terrific, and senior staff supportive. All of this started with Lt Col Ninness' video!

We should be doing another cohort in mid-spring!

What are WE (locally) doing to improve our own retention in our own units?

On IACE to New Zealand many years ago, we visited "HMNZTS Tauranga." (Her Majesty's New Zealand Training Ship, i.e. a concrete block building equipped with the ship's wheel and bell from the scrapped HMNZS Tauranga. In other words, a Sea Cadet unit).

During our tour, one of the officers mentioned that they had a full officer complement. In fact, they had a waiting list for people to become officers and civilian instructors. They also had a very active parents committee. They even had a packed officer/instructor/parent meeting twice a month in addition to the cadet meeting. No retention issues. People stayed involved for 20 years+.

Then they took us into the ward room. As in, fully equipped, with comfy chairs and a stocked bar.

I'm just sayin'.

Hi Bernie - It has been a while.  I went to New Zealand the year after you, in 1972, and I remember a number of adult member lounges and cadet lounges that had well stocked bars.  The adult lounges had the hard stuff and the cadets had soft drinks.  That was on-site and then the cadets took us to their unofficial gathering spots.  What we got away with, back in the day, we would never allow as seniors.  Or at least when we knew about it.  Went back in 1979 as an escort and knowing what I knew I worried and preached, "Don't embarrass yourself, or me, or CAP and watch out for each other!"  They did and all went well.  Merry Christmas - Lance

Lance:

Those words of advice were, word for word, what our escort told us in 1971. Colonel Roger Guilmette, former commander of WA Wing. On our first day in NZ he reminded us and the New Zealand hosts that we could participate only in "formal toasts." Trouble was, that only resulted in...more formal toasts. The next morning, he gave us the "don't embarrass" advice, in the form of an order. He told us that violators would be immediately sent home and we knew he meant it. We were all 18-21 and policed ourselves quite well.

Different time, different circumstances.

Tomorrow night I will be presenting a Recruiting & Retention training "Cohort Recruiting: Great Idea or Greatest Idea?" (kudos to our own dwb for the tag line idea last year).

This presentation starts at 2100 hrs Eastern as a Google Hangout On Air.

During this this presentation we will discuss:

- What cohort recruiting is and is not.
- How cohort recruiting can benefit small & struggling units
- What effect cohort recruiting will have on your program
- How you can implement cohort recruiting in your unit

You can view this presentation live on Google Hangouts On Air at this link starting at 2100 Eastern time on Tuesday, 22 March: http://bit.ly/Mar22_Recruiting.

Google Hangouts On Air is essentially a live broadcast of a Google Hangout session using screen sharing, video and audio. You do not need a Google account to participate or view this presentation. Questions can be submitted via Google Hangouts On Air Q&A function, or via Twitter using the hashtag ‪#‎CAPRecruiting‬.

Please share this with your fellow members via email and other social media. If you can't attend live, the entire recorded presentation will be available immediately afterward at the link above as a YouTube video.

Thanks!

Sounds great, but I'm confused.  You start out by announcing you're presenting this recruiting aid tomorrow night, then you finish by writing we all can see this presentation live, via the link you gave, on 22 March @ 2100 EST.

Could you clear this up before I send your message to everyone I know who would benefit from it?
