Title: Squadron Library
Post by: thefischNX01 on March 07, 2007, 04:35:00 AM
So I just finished reading a book "George Washington's Leadership Lessons", and I found it good enough that I've recommended it to my cadets to read. (my review of the book can be found at http://whats-a-flight-officer.blogspot.com/2007/02/recommended-reading.html (http://whats-a-flight-officer.blogspot.com/2007/02/recommended-reading.html))

Then an idea dawned on me: why not open up a Squadron Library.  The library would consist of books on Leadership, Aerospace, Writing/Communications Skills, ES, CAP/USAF history, and some other topics that we could decide on.  The main purpose would serve as a supplement to the readings that the program already has.  To use "George Washington's Leadership Lessons" as an example, this would allow cadets to further Study Leadership (which as outlined in AFAIDL 00013 Volume 4 is one of the steps in preparing yourself to lead).

This library could potentially also be used by Seniors, which is why I'm placing it in The Lobby.

The only issue that we as a squadron would face would be the lack of space at our meeting location.  However, I think we could work around that and figure something out.

Thoughts?  Comments?  Suggestions?

Ahh my fellow TFO/DCC Blogger-in crime.  It would be a good idea, and in fact I have seen squadrons that have had...not libraries per-say but rather large book collections on topics such as leadership and aerospace.  Most all of the book were donated or loaned from members of the squadron and seemed to be well received.

Well, the AE Specialty track calls for an AE library, and the Senior Program Officer track calls for a senior training materials library, so the precedent is there (see CAPPs 204 & 215).

Good to know.  However I'm talking about expanding it to include ES resources (i.e. Katrina AAR), Writing/Communications resources (i.e. "A Writers Reference" by Diana Hacker)  and things such as that.  A resource not just for leadership or aerospace, but other things to provide the best possible chance for all to succeed in whatever area they want to.

My squadron has a pretty good little library.  Not a lot in the way of ES but a ton of AE and leadership stuff.

If you are recomending books to read here is a great one.  It took me some time to even start reading it for some stupid reason, but once you read it you come up with some great ideas.  it is short and fast read also.

Drop the '%20' from the end of the linky, and it should work OK.

We're considering outfitting one of our closets with shelving and making that the library, or where the books are kept.  Of course, you'd want a log to record who has borrowed what.  We discussed selecting a cadet to oversee the library.

well, of course.  I've already made up a sample form that the cadet would fill out, and would be kept in Squadron records

that's an interesting idea, sir.  I will have to look at that idea further
