Has anyone read anything interesting in their packing lists for encampment or NCSAs
Like this: DO NOT BRING: electronics of any kind, watches, clocks, weapons of any kind, food of any kind, pornographic material, medicine other than prescription. NO CELL PHONES-Leave them with your parents.

I mean C'mon I can't wear a watch ???

Not as a basic cadet; if you are a basic you don't need to know what time it is. I remember one time as a basic thinking we where going to lunch, and it was only breakfast time.

Don't worry once you've completed basic you can have some of that stuff back.  As staff you'll need a watch.  As far as cell phones go even some staff won't have them depending on what the activity is and who's running it.

No watches? We debated that on CS - silliest thing I ever heard of.

Cel phones aren't allowed at most encampments for obvious reasons of distraction, but most simply power them down and put them with contraband.  For better or worse most cadets "need" them on the way to/from, etc.

As to the other things you mention, that should be obvious.

At most encampments and NCSAs, Senior Members have to play by the same rules. It sucks, but for encampment it's only a week (more or less) and most NCSAs aren't too long.

Honestly, while I think the no watch rule is stupid, I understand it's purpose. It is not your job to make sure that you and your flight are on schedule, it's your Flight Sergeant and Flight Commander's job. But a watch would be nice when you are on fire watch duty or some other task where you have to keep on schedule. Off the record, I snuck a basic, cheapo watch from Walmart into my basic encampment. It saved me, my FLT/CC, and my SQ/CC several times. Don't try to sneak anything into encampment ;)

No, that is incorrect.  If its not, please cite the activities.

I am not aware of any NCSA's or encampments that do contraband checks or confiscate cell phones, etc., from Seniors.  That, would be the height of ridiculous.  Senior members are adults, and responsible for their own actions should they do something stupid.

The only place I could see this being close to reasonable would be for IACE because of the considerations of international travel.

That makes no sense.

How would the staff keep the events on schedule if they have no watches?

How could they call for EMS in case of an accident if they have no phones?

Cadets don't need either of these devices, however.

Ugh...I didn't mean stuff like watches for Cadet Staff and SMs. Usually only basic cadets have to deal with that rule.

I've seen cell phones taken away from Seniors. SM+Crackberry=Major distraction, especially if they are a TAC Officer. I have also seen a SM get asked to turn in their computer or leave after he was caught looking at inappropriate things.

Recently at a FTX, full of cadets, I had to tell a SM (from another unit) to put his CCW back in his truck. Apparently he had been wearing it all day and no one knew until he took his BDU blouse off. He's been CAP for 5 years and no one told him that he couldn't carry in uniform.

The point is, it does happen.

Reminding ding-dong members to act professionally and pay attention to the duties they volunteered for is different than confiscating contraband, etc.  Many of our key members have outside duties and responsibilities and their connectivity during encampments, etc., is the only reason they can be there at all. (updating FaceSpace or Tweetering about how kewl encampment is doesn't count)

As to the firearm issue, just so we're clear on the reg, if the member is required by law to carry the weapon, then CAP allows for it. (a civilian with an arbitrary CCW would not fall into this category).

Quote from: CAPR 900-3, page 1
1. Firearms. Civil Air Patrol members will not carry, wear, or use firearms, including air guns (pellet or BB) while engaged in Civil Air Patrol activities. The carrying of firearms prohibition is subject to the following exceptions:
a. A member may carry firearms on his/her person when required to do so by law provided he/she has a written statement of proof of such requirement signed by the Wing Commander.
b. Firearms may be carried in survival gear in CAP aircraft when required by law. When firearms are so authorized, they will not be removed from the survival gear unless an emergency situation exists.

Being unprofessional with a cel phone seems to be an epidemic these days:
