. . do we really have that many folks in china who are interested in these goings on? i noticed baidu as having peeps monitoring the messages here. lotsa peeps, like dozens.
. . google says its a chinese web services company, home ported in beijing.
. . is china initiating a form of our civil air patrol?

It's just a web crawler. It follows links and indexes the pages they lead to. There's probably a dozen instances of Google and Yahoo too.
Baidu is just a search engine.
