It would seem that, in the past, a certain amount of "cumstomization" was allowed in the service. I can assume this was because USAF regulations were in transition from the US Army days. The embroidered rank, ribbons and hold over patches from the Air Corps days lasted, according to my late uncle, well into the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Note the various sets of "dress uniforms" and "whites." This is an excellent page for a glimps into USAF uniform history. And the "McPeaks" are there too!!!
