Title: USAF Blues coat redesign, how I would do it (maybe) [Image]
Post by: Starbird on April 30, 2018, 07:01:07 PM
Hello!

It is fairly well known, I suspect, that most people who wear the blues coat (USAF/CAP/ROTC/JROTC) are not very happy with the design, often claiming that it looks far too much like a business blazer, etc.  I was bored yesterday, so I drew up my own concept for a coat redesign (shown below.)  I posted it to reddit (/r/AirForce), where it got mixed views.  I figured I'd post it here, just to see what you all think, since blues are our uniform, too!

(I promise, I'm not trying to start a uniform argument here.)

Thoughts?  I can draw up a CAP distinctive version, if anyone is interested.

It's a CG Aux uni. Drop the belt, the collar brass, and the cuff insignia, and just move back to the old 4 button uni.

It really isn't that similar to a CGAUX uniform:

And I'd very much prefer the 4 button over what we have currently!

One question, why?

The Air Force Uniform Board has had several suggested redesigns of the Service Dress Uniform come and go over the years, none have made it past the prototype stage yet.
The current design has now been around for about 20 years with no signs of a replacement in sight.

Suggest you get used to it.

It really is. http://wow.uscgaux.info/content.php?unit=014-05-04&category=bravos

And what PHall said. For all of the hair pulling and teeth gnashing when it was fielded, institutional inertia has taken hold and it's not going anywhere.

So basically the old style with 2 less buttons? Honestly I like this one. The only changes I'd recommend would be to drop the trim on the belt and give it more of a buckle, and the doo-hicky on the lapel (I forgot what they're called :P) but keep the "U.S." because it looks nice. Also is the white shirt intentional? I think the blue that we currently have looks fine, if not better.

Here's a prototype from some years ago that went down in flames.

You would NOT like wearing it with the choker collar. That was not the only reason it was not adopted.

Yeea I can see how we didn't do this. Sorry USAF, but in my opinion only the USMC and USN can pull it off.

This is just an "I dream of Jeannie" jacket with a belt, not a CG variation.

Frankly, considering the vector of other services, this is likely the direction
a new USAF service coat would take.

With that said, I can't imagine why the calories were burned on this, (Fortnite login
servers down?) but whatever.

I would recommend dropping prop and wings from the lapel, the belt, and the piping. Basically just make it look like the USAFA service dress.

Old 4 pocket design, in the new darker shade. Keep the Hap Arnold buttons and every other accouterment.

The US Army including the US Army Air Service wore the choker collar for decades. Think WWI era. That was the original reason that the uniform design was considered by the Air Force.

Soooo... More like this, then?

;)

Pretty much looks like a darker USAFA/Legacy uniform now! (Opted to keep the hard boards, as I think they look more professional, but that's just me) :)

Bite the bullet. Add the two lower pocket buttons.

The air force actually prototyped this in 2006.
