Cadet Lucas S. Smith
Beach Cities Cadet Squadron 107
California Wing

Lucas Soares Smith suddenly passed away on Tuesday, July 24th 2018 at his home in Redondo Beach, California. Lucas was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on September 5th, 2002. He is survived by his father, Philip Smith and his mother, Marianna Smith, his younger sister, Julia Smith and his dog Rocky. From his first year onwards until his twelfth birthday, Lucas lived happily in Seattle, Washington and was a student and member of the Our Lady of the Lake School and church community. He sang for the church choir, played baseball and soccer and he earned himself a Tae Kwon Do black belt.
When our family moved to Southern California, Lucas was twelve. He adapted to the new environment and took up new activities, such as surfing, swimming and Junior Life Guards. As of just recently, Lucas was a student at South High School in Torrance, California. He ran for both the freshman Track and Field and Cross Country teams. He aspired to continue running and to take up wrestling in his upcoming sophomore year. Since a young boy, Lucas was always fascinated with the natural world. His mind was always full of wonder for animals and creatures of the sea. He shared a deep mutual connection with his dog Rocky, actively playing or lazily resting together in warmth of each other's company. He enjoyed being outdoors and loved to walk in the dark ancient forests of the Pacific Northwest and to swim in its cold glacial-fed lakes. He relished climbing to the top of the mountains, just to behold the panoramic view above the trees, into the valleys and peaks of the Cascade Mountains. His heart was always open and caring for those less fortunate. He had a no-nonsense demeanor that enabled him to laugh at those taking themselves too seriously. We were all victims, friends and family alike, of his goofy jokes and pranks, all for the sake of having a good time and being happy in the presence of each other. Lucas was Cadet Technical Sergeant in Beach Cities Cadet Squadron 107 of the Civil Air Patrol at the Torrance Airport. He was posthumously awarded the Red Service Ribbon for two years of being a cadet member in good standing. He constantly sought to sit in the pilot's seat of the airplanes.
Above the clouds and over our heads is where our dear son felt most at home. It is where we hope he finds his peace and continues to fly like a bird.
Greg Putnam, Lt. Col., CAP
