While talking to my grandmother today, who happens to be 90, she told me I should write a book.  We were watching the news and saw Hillary Clinton and I mentioned how in NYC one day, I saw her Secret Service detail helping her from her limo conversion van.  That's right, she traveled in a full-sized conversion van.  Why not?  It's comfy and inconspicuous.  So, grandma, or "mom-mom" as I've called her since day one, asked who else have I met....the list is long and distinguished and I'm sure only about a 1/3 that I can think of right now.

My previous job from '01 to '06 had me all around the world and rubbing shoulders with some popular folks.  In 2 minutes, before I start getting ready for work, I'll try list as many as possible and attempt to spell their names correctly.  Either way, tell us the folks you've seen, shook hands with, hung out with, tripped, stumbled into or otherwise gave a shout out to in person....

Hillary and Bill Clinton
Bush Sr and Babs
Bush and Laura
Rummy
Wolfowitz (the guy I protected)
Katherine Zeta and Mike Douglas
Angelina Jolee
Oprah
Gen Meyers (went to his retirement)
Gen Pace
Nelson Mandella (went to his house in S. Africa)
Bono (went to his house in Dublin)
Koffi Annan (been to his house lots of times)
Hamid Karsai
Tony Blair
Arnold Schwartzeneger and wife
Colin Powell (marched in his retirement and saw him lots of other times)
Al Gore (road an elevator with him and held his Starbucks while he tied his shoe)
Paula Zahn (drover her)
Wolf Blitzer
Drew Carry (held conversation with him)
Rudolph Juliani
John McCain
Vladimir Putin (at his house)
SecDef Cohen
Sec Def Perry
Dick Cheney (been to his house several times)
Gen Shalikashvili
Gen Shelton
All the service chiefs, senior enlisted and secretaries from like '95 to '06.

Man, I can remember a lot of titles but not names.  Will be going though a list and writing them down at work tonight.  Should be fun.

[EDIT]  Forgot one important one, one of my favorites:  Condoleezza Rica  (saw her many times, shook hands, spoke to and even rode up her elevator in the State Dept with just me, my protectee, her and her agent.)
Serving since 1987.

John Kerry (stumbled into...but I think he was the one who was lost, because he was in a HOUSE office building)
Hillary Clinton ::sigh:: and her friend Bill
John McCain
Ted Stevens (philosopher on internet issues)
General John Abizaid
President George W. Bush

Next, I plan on meeting Ultimate Kirt and going on a hunting trip with Dick Cheney (hopefully with UK, so I am protected)

I was very young and wasn't watching where I was going and almost walked right into Vincent Price!  Now - that was scary - and he was a big man.  Never met but stood close to Dorothy Hamill.  But I did meet my boyhood hero - Roy Rogers! And some former governors of my state.  And, as I stood close to a window this guy waved at me from the other side and I waved back - Jerry Lewis.  As you can see - my list is extremely short.  I didn't get around much and still don't.  But, like many of us, I've been through five Nat'l Commanders and have met all of them.

I didn't even know she was going to be there.  I was working at Walter Reed and walked down to the local Safeway store to grab something for lunch.  Outside was the big car and some suits keeping people from entering the store.  Moments later she walked out and got into the car.  Apparently she was giving some kind of talk there.  This was back in the mid 90's, so it was during Bill's term.  It was just a chance encounter.

Funny, cuz I use to see Secretary of Treasury John Snow weekly.  One time, when leaving Mr. K's restaurant on K St in DC, my principal was walking out with Mr. Snow and Mr. Snow looked at me and said "you ready to go", meaning, are we set to leave (car in place, team ready).  I explained to him that I was with Mr. Wolfensohn and his detail were chillin' out in their motorcade vehicles.  So yeah, he recognized me.

Same with Sec State Powell.  In Madrid at the Afghanistan Donors Conference in '03, Powell looks at me and says "what's your name again, I seem to see you a lot these days".  I explained how we've been hanging out for years.  As CJCS, I stood outside the SecDef's door in blues and later marched in his retirement ceremony at Ft. Myer  <<---Joking with him of course, but he got it and asked if I was stalking him.

And yeah, I'd say Condi Rice got used to my face too.  One day, while in NYC at the Charlie Rose show, she made her way to me and shook my hand saying "good to see you again".  That was when she was still National Security Advisor.

No way these folks knew my name, but sure, some got to know my face.  They're the celebrities, not us.

I met Gen Powell here in NYC once. He was a VERY close friend with my former boss and mentor. They went to City College together. I had a nice chat with him (he's the reason I'm a republican actually). I was extremely impressed with what he has been able to achieve as an African-American man of his generation and as a man in general. Considering his values, the challenges that he'd faced and his background, I immediately thought of why he, a man of color and a New Yorker chose the Republican party and... well... that was 13 years ago and I'm still quite involved in the GOP in NYC. The conversation with him also helped me to solidify my desire to serve my country. A few months after that I enlisted in the USAF Res, which eventually led me to CAP.

I met Sec. Rice a few months ago. Was quite impressed with her almost perfect Russian.

Well, during residency training I had the opportunity to speak for about 15 minutes privately with the actor DeForest Kelley, Dr. McCoy from Star Trek fame, and his wife Carolyn.

Spoke with them right before he was scheduled to go on stage at a Trek Convention in Chicago to an audience of 1,000+.

Knew the con organizer, told her he was the reason I went into medicine (maybe he was, worked like a charm).

That's when I learned that Dr. McCoy smoked Marlboro's (were in his shirt pocket)!

Also have a funny story about meeting the actor Patrick Stewart, but that's for another time.

Walkman

My list isn't nearly as cool as all y'alls...

When I lived in So. Mich, the area Christian radio station would host a huge free all-day music fest each summer. One year, my buddy couldn't go at the last minute, so I went alone. They annouced over the PA that they needed some more volunteer help, and since I was solo, I asked what I could do. They put me in front of the stage as "security" to make sure the fans didn't go on stage. Stood right in front of the stacks. One guy did hop the fence and I had to escort him off stage.

The last act of the night was Jars of Clay. I noticed that Steve Mason (guitar) had an Apple Computer logo on his axe. My kind of guy! So after their set, the announced that they also needed some people to help strike the stage, so I went up to help. I helped Steve put away his guitars and we chatted about Macs and computers for a bit. A very cool guy!

Only a few old timers would recognize this guy. Remember "Horshack" from 'Welcome Back Kotter"? He played the lead in a show I worked tech on when I was younger. Dude can't sing a note, but he was a lot of fun. He brought a backgammon board to the green room and pretty much killed anyone who wold play him.

(cuz that's what's really important)

You're my celebrity.  ;D

Darin, I invited her to DC but I don't think she took me seriously.  The two of you could have jumped in the Colors while Nick and I set up and secure the DZ.
Well, if you had told me there'd be jumping... ;)

I just found out right now, too.  I'm kinda bettin' the FSDO won't approve that request for waiver on like 48-hrs notice....

Who wants to jump on the eastern seaboard in February?  I just did the wx check and its going to be in the 50s Friday & Saturday (jumpable) and then down in the mid-30s on Sunday (non-jumpable). Plus my reserve is out of date and my rigger is slow.

Yeah, the heck with that.

Nice planning, Kirt.  Way to go, buddy.

Well, they do the "Great White North Boogie" (where some of us snow-bound folks head south) in January at either Sebastian or Lake Wales. Unfortunately, working for a college, this tends to fall on the "spring semester return" weekend. Grrrrr.  According to reports, this year the wx was uncooperative for 4 of the 5 days. Bummer.  Glad I didn't go, cuz sitting 'round a DZ with my thumb up and locked waiting for the wx is NOT my idea of a vacation.

I'm personally preferable to Z-Hills, having jumped the Turkey Boogie, the Christmas Boogie and the Easter Boogie there many times.   I know TK and a lot of my buddies jump there. The facilities are top notch and the vibe is excellent.

We should do a CAP boogie.. Let me start a topic on that, I'm curious....

EDIT: Here, to keep it slightly on topic: I met my girlfriend in freefall once...

I got to work scene security for the filming of "The Fast and the Furious" and "Sea biscuit" both were filmed in a city where I was a police officer.  That was interesting how everything looks in real life, then how its transformed digitally on screen. So, anyway, I was able to meet many of the people in those movies.  Although I have never been to impressed by entertainers in general.

Meeting the Commandant of the Marine Corps when I was a young Corporal was pretty neat.  As well as Gov. Schwarzenegger. Hes not as tall as you might think.

I met Michael Richards once - before his big "error."  But honestly, I don't really buy into peoples "fame."  To me, it doesn't really make a difference if you just meet someone, but if you can spend some time with them and actually learn something from them - one of those things that made so many people admire them.

Absolutely agree there.  I always try to bug them for a nugget of something - thoughts on leadership, life, business...  I rarely ask for pictures - I think it deters from things.  The stuff that I've learned has been far more valuable than a framed picture or an autograph.

Most of my experiences around "famous people" hasn't been me hanging out and having coffee with them, but me doing a job in their presence.  That said, most of the people I've listed weren't in passing or from afar, they were in official, personal and intimate (private) settings; at their house, during dinner and a lot of times, in the car with me in the front seat.

For example, I was around Colin Powell so often that he actually recognized me; once cracking a joke.  Condi Rice, a very pleasant woman, shook my hand everytime she saw me.  And heck, the Mayor of Sao Paolo even bought me a coke once at the Kennedy Center.

Anyway, as a young soldier in the Army, many troops, to include myself, used to say "what's so good about a general, they put their pants on the same way I do"?  Well, over the years, I learned that to be the case, but a lot of these people, whether they be a the Secretary of State, Army Chief of Staff or Minister of Finance for Norway, they truly are not average.  Yes, some people come into power and high level positions in less than honorable ways, but for the most part, they aren't like a CAP squadron who got command 6 months after they joined the organization because no one else would take the job.

I hate you^^  She is my dream girl!

I've only met 3 famous people, thus far and oddly enough got to spend a significant amount of time with each of  them.

I met Gen. Colin Powell WIWAC, and we got to eat dinner with him in a group of about 20 cadets.

When we went to Sea World with my brother care of Make a Wish, we got a VIP tour that happened to be the same tour Pat Sajak and his family were on.  Spent almost the entire day with them (very nice people)

And finally, in a laundromat in Northern Wisconsin I spoke for about an hour with a bearded gentlemen with a familiar way about him.  Turns out it was Robin Williams but whether I was blind or just not observant I didn't recognize him till he introduced himself just before he left.  (maybe the beard was meant to disguise him too)
