I didn't know EPIRBs are "only capable of bringing help within 15 miles of your position" and only work for 48 hours.  Man this thing must be so much better than that![/sarcasm]

Not a bad idea.  I've seen similar things that were more bulky, made for boats.  It's pretty hard to improvise a signal on the ground that is that evident but I don't know about paying $35 and up for it.  I think my $2 emergency blanket would work pretty well.  It'd be a good idea for our aircrews who do bay patrol.

The 121.5 has circle 12-15 miles in diameter, the 406 beacon 1-3 miles....withing 100 yards if you have GPS option.

Back in the day when I was scuba diving we had something like this.  It did not trail off behind you but you inflated it.  It was about 6" in diameter and 10' long.  It was supposed to allow the dive boat to find you easer.

I think I still have one in my dive bag somewhere.
