Unfortunately there wasn't anyone like me that could warn members of what a waste of time it is. I had to learn for myself.

Don't scoff.  I understand the point dog is making.  I once had a similar experience while visiting the Vatican.  I was shocked that the place was populated almost exclusively by Catholics.

Being a member of the Aitr Force doesn't mean that you have to accept the foolish air power doctrine. But your metaphor is apt, "air power" is like a religion but more like fundamentalist Islam than Catholicism.

I'm a grad, too.  I took that part for what it was: the operation was conceived by politicians (read: a president that loathed the military and didn't want any casualties on his watch).  The goal was clear - sling as many bombs as possible, but don't get anyone on our side hurt.

You're all right - you can't win a war unless you occupy and control the ground.  But the AF wasn't going to let a draw (vice victory) go to waste.
