Title: communication, miscommunication, and highly coupled, high risk activities
Post by: Live2Learn on October 19, 2017, 06:02:21 PM
This is an interesting article and research here on language (native and 2nd, phraseology, and communication).  The topic of communication/language in high risk, technically tight systems like aviation might be worthwhile for a pilot workshop, or even in a Squadron safety discussion.  Even flying here in the US I've encountered instances where I've wondered "what did [that controller, pilot, or ???] say?" as I listened to their transmission, or spoke with them in the shop.  Some defugalties even occur when native English speakers have strong regional (or international) accents.  I'm sure many of us have seen media articles that likewise discussed major miscommunications in other industries or situations.  For example miscommunications or total absence of communication between LEO's or other emergency and public safety workers, and individuals who have limited (or no) ability to speak or understand English have resulted in serious injuries and even fatalities.

I see what you did there!
For a minute I was actually about to go look up "defugalties" to see what it meant! LOL nice one.

How about when people mizyewz English, riggardluss of weather they have any regional or international acksents or knot? That's when the real defugalties occur.

Ever meet someone who says "utilize" for "use", "leverage" for "use", "implement" for "carry out", and "regarding" for "about"?

Yep.  Cross/Com = No/Com  Gotta admit though, "defugalties" has a nice ring to it... :)  It even SOUNDS like a screw-up-in-progress.
