The pilot killed in a small plane crash in the mountains near Lake Tahoe has been identified as a 40-year-old Palo Alto, Calif., man.

The body of Doyle John Borchers II was the only one found Aug. 8 in the wreckage of a rented Cessna 172 in the Carson Range above Incline Village.

Authorities say the plane took off Aug. 7 from Palo Alto, but it's unclear where the pilot was headed because no flight plan was filed.

The Cessna was registered to Advantage Aviation Inc. of Palo Alto.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.

Signals from an emergency transmitter beacon alerted authorities to the crash. The Civil Air Patrol found the wreckage.

Borchers died of multiple injuries due to blunt force trauma, Washoe County medical examiners said.
