Second thread on the same topic. Disamuel already started one.

See Topic: We have a new National Commander  (Read 10 times), http://captalk.net/index.php?topic=xxxxx.msgxxxxxx;topicseen#new

ed: Both threads were merged. This link is disabled.

That is the second thread. NIN beat it by 46 minutes....

Either way, interesting choice.

Ok, but I saw that second one before I did Nin's.

Either way I was surprised as to why Nin's did not appear on MY notifications first...

...and Nin's thread has a NICER title...

 ;D

Anyway thanks to BOTH members who are trying to get US connected and informed!

I think it will be Brig Gen Select Smith, however it is excellent news in any case.  Our Civil Air Patrol is in very capable hands!

National commander giving up a star?

CAPR 35-5 prior to Nov 2016 had HEADCAP getting one star the first year.

Current revision removes that and grants the CEO/National CC to temporary grade of Maj Gen concurrent with appointment.

Wait...

The BOG appointed a member who is an Academy graduate, served as a field grade USAF officer,
has a Masters in AV Management, a Doctorate in Ethical LEADERSHIP, has served as Unit, Wing, & Region CC,
participated actively in the CAP PD working groups, and has real-world business operations experience?

This alternate universe seems pretty nice, assuming there's no superhero / mutant rebellion going on, I think I'll stick around...

Would be nice if maybe, just maybe, he wore CAP insignia and awards on his CAP uniform....

I agree, it would be nice if he wore his CAP insignia and awards. Looking at his tunic, though, and assuming he is aware f the requirement to wear CAP aeronautical devices and ribbons on CAP service dress, my guess is that he grabbed the wrong tunic and threw his CAP epaulet sleeves on at the last minute for the picture. I'm inclined to give the Colonel the benefit of the doubt here. I wore nothing but my AC wings and USMC ribbons for my first six months or so until I could get all my CAP awards put together. Of course now I look like a Panamanian Field Marshal in service uniform when I wear my CAP awards and Military awards together. Either that or text saltiness 2ndLt around!  :P

There is a big difference between a new member wearing only their RM bling and a CAP colonel who is a serving Region Commander. One has (or should have, there have been cases where it is not always true) a big collection of CAP-wear and the other not so much. I've never been a big proponent of wearing all allowable RM stuff. To me it is as if the wearer is saying CAP insignia on a CAP uniform is not as important as all this other stuff I have...For a Region Commander to be wearing no CAP insignia aside from his grade gives the impression that CAP is somehow lesser.

A momentous announcement concerning an incredibly well-qualified officer becoming our new national commander and it took less than a dozen replies before it became a uniform thread.

Really?

Sigh.

Commanders may come and go, but CAP-Talk is the one fixed point in a changing age.

Big question now is who Col Smith will appoint as his Vice.

Ned Lee

Then he should present himself as a well qualified CAP commander, and not a well qualified USAF commander.

It's only a uniform discussion if you ignore the larger point. It's fair criticism.

I see from Col Smith's accomplishments, most of it has direct connection to two of CAP's overall missions: Leadership Education both as to cadets and senior members, and Aerospace Education. Not intending to belittle Col Smith's achievements, but what can we say about his accomplishments applying connection to Emergency Services?

Bravo Zulu, Col Smith!

Leadership education of adults is not a mission of CAP. Sometimes it's a happy accident in our PD program, but it's not a mission.

The moment any commander or staff member considers themselves a gatekeeper, instead of a facilitator, they have failed at their job.
I can't fix all of CAP's problems, but I can lead from the bottom by building my squadron as a center of excellence to serve as an example of what every unit can be.
