Alfred J. "Smokey" Gausman, 72, of 129 Bank St., St. Marys, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2017 at the VA Hospital in Pittsburgh after a brief illness. He was born March 24, 1945 in St. Marys, son of the late Alfred and Edna Krumenacker Gausman. He was a graduate of Elk County Christian High School, Class of 1963. Smokey held positions at the St. Marys Police Department, the Ridgway Police Department and served as sheriff of Elk County. He was also an employee of the PennDOT Licensing Center, Clarion Sintered Metals and was most recently employed by Walmart.
On Dec. 20, 1975, Smokey married Elizabeth Jane "Betty" Ilconich, who preceded him in death April 14, 2017. Smokey was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a volunteer with the Civil Air Patrol. He was also a member of the Pennsylvania Sheriff's Association. He is survived by a daughter, Linda Samick of St. Marys; a son, Randy (Riza) Beck of Florida; five grandchildren, Devon Gausman, Barbara and James Samick, Kayla (Stephen) Sedlacek and Kyra Beck; seven sisters, Shirley (Dale) Marchand of Exton, Mary (James) Jacob of St. Marys, Helen (Fred) Beatty of Broomall, Karen Gausman of Broomall, Patty (Phil) Labant of St. Marys, Pauline Rupprecht Gausman of St. Marys and Janet (Ken) Gabler of St. Marys; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Krumenacker of Colver and Mary Ann Abplanap of Texas; a brother-in-law, Robert Ewing of St. Marys; and by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Smokey was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert "Bobby" Gausman and Archie Krumenacker.
